Apple, Tell me which OS' my Mac will run

Over the last month, I have wasted a huge amount of time trying to upgrade my 13" Macbook Pro. I went to the extreme of creating an SSD with multiple copies of 10.12.6 (which runs) and uphgrading them indicidually to see which version of OS would run without disrupting my existing environmengt.

Why did I do this?

Because statements like "runs on 13" Macbook Pro after mid 2012" are not helpful.!

I want t be able to plug my serial number into a web-page form and be told which versions of OS run it.

Oh, as for the model number? I don't mean "MacBookPro9,2", there is another number that is used, usually starting with A.

Please Apple, provide information that saves time.

The simplest solution for me has been to run s/w that will not run under OS 10.12.6 under a Windows 10 image under Parallels.

But, the amount of time I have wasted is inordinate!

< MacBookPro9,2 > your 13" Mid-2012 non-retina MBP can run all the way up to MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina

If you’re on macOS 10.12, then macOS 10.13 will work.

As was suggested above, see 🍎 > About This Mac for your model and year.

For app compatibility, Mojave 10.14 is the last that’ll run 32-bit apps. Catalina 10.15 and Big Sur 11 require all apps be 64-bit.

Use Go64 to find your 32-bit apps. Those apps will need an upgrade, an alternative, or retirement for 10.15 and later. Microsoft Office 2011 and earlier will need to be upgraded to Office 2026 or later (Office 2019 and 365 subscriptions are current), or a migration to LibreOffice, or to Apple iWork which can read and write many Office documents.

And for your feedback, send it to Apple as they don’t always see what gets posted here: Product Feedback - Apple
