Security Services data usage
Hello
My System services, specifically security services has started burning through my cellular data on iOS 14.4.1 and now 14.4.2. Please, what can I do to stop it?
Tried factory reset today, did not help.

Got the exact same issue. Seems that Security services is gobbling insane about of data. I've captured the data being sent over the cell network (everything is secured using TLS 1.2 or 1.3) but end up on the 17.0.0.0/8 subnet. So it's data sent back and forth with Apple owned Services, and cannot be controlled by the user (or it's background tasks that is doing this).
Because of the secure nature of the network traffic, it's hard to guesswork what it being used and the logs don't seem to give any insights. However, one thing is for sure, it's something tied to the AppleID. One thing worth mentioning, this network traffic is also happening on Wi-Fi but since most Wi-Fi access are unlimited or with high caps, it's not noticeable. But turning off data and only using Wi-Fi showed the same odd traffic pattern. The fact it's happening on cell network is just more observable.
I've logged out of my AppleID on my device, restarted it (shutdown and cold boot) and there is no further traffic (or very little)
Opened up a case and entered a bug report on the dev website, but so far, very little seems to be known about this right now. I'm somehow happy to see I'm not insane and not the only one having issues like this, and moreover happening on various carriers (even more intriguing)
Would be nice to see if those affected are using family sharing feature or not.
When did you last reset statistics in Settings/Cellular?
That’s really strange, then; I don’t see how it could use that much data in 2 hours. Have you checked with your carrier to see if it actually used that amount of data?
You can get support whether your phone is in or out of warranty. Click on the Get Support link at the top of this page.

Do you have a company email account on your phone, or is it being managed by a company using Mobile Device Management (MDM)?
This still happens to me and I have to be very cautious to always disable Keychain off of Wifi, otherwise my mobile data for the month is dead without a day. Is anyone at apple looking at this?
Yep. It did run through my plan and the costly added data packages several times over in the last few days. The screenshots you've been seeing are fresh, but I already replenished my data package on my carrier account several times and it's getting costly :-(
I'm having exactly the same problem. Security services within system services is draining my data plan, a 16 GB plan. I recharged it 5 times and it is becoming really expensive. Mu carrier in Mexico said that it could be an app that is prompting security services. This stated around Friday March 19th. Not sure if it make sense. Anyone experiencing the same problem? Any idea on how to fix it? The following pic was taken 2 hours before a reset
Talked to Apple support. They don't have any idea what can it be and they sent me to an Apple store to check my phone, thing that I did before and there solution was to send me to talk to Apple support.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem since Mid March.
Security services used 70GB of my cellular data plan.
I tried the following:
Everytime, I restored my iPhone backup from iCloud.
I'm using Family Sharing, but I'm the only one affected
My phone is an iPhone 11 Pro Max.
I have created a ticket at Apple Support by they had no clue so far.
Help needed.
I tried to check the Console Logs of the iPhone, but I did not observe anything weird.
I am now one step ahead of you. I did everything you did, but also talked to Apple Support and got my device into a repair check.
The repair finished with no repairs done, so finally I will talk to support again and will hopefully have a case to feed them some logs.
Thanks a lot, this is what I have in mind as everything else did not bring anything so far.
As my next call with Senior support level is not planned before next Saturday.
So, I might try that, but I would really need also to understand where the problem comes from.
Thanks for your deep analysis.
i agree with your thoughts and the timeline when it all started.
i can confirm that disabling location services did not help at all.
my next step will be to logout of iCloud and see.
I’ll let you know.
After upgrading to IOS 14.5, I still have exactly the same behavior.
7 GB used by Security Services in 24h. (and I'm disabling Cellular Data as much as possible)
This is insane!
I had to send more logs to Apple Support on Monday, but I still don't have any news.
I tried many time to disable iCloud Keychain, but even on IOS 14.5 it does not work.
When I'm prompted the iCloud password, after a while, keychain stay enabled.
But I also see that I cannot logout from ICloud on my iPhone, it says: "Sign-out is not available due to restrictions"
Restrictions that I don't know how how to circumvent.
Ok. We did a nice reproduction scenario with Apple support few minutes ago:
0) disable wifi
1) reset data usage statistics
2) open safari
3) open macg.co website
4) check data usage statistics
3.9 mb of data were used by security services over 4g
