Can’t update iOS because asking for passcode

Tried to update my iOS on iPhone 11 and it is asking for a passcode. Why? In past I entered my Apple ID.

I don’t have a passcode or at least don’t remember setting one up.

also, when I text anyone the texts go through silently...no alerts. Figured it was a bug in iOS, hence my wanting to update.

Seems to me if the update caused my passcode to change there should be more support from apple to rectify the issue. Any suggestions or third party apps available to recover data would be much appreciated.

If I don't put this passcode in, I get a message in itunes that says the phone can't be backed up. Just started this w/ 16.1. I've never had to do this before. All software is up to date. Windows 10 home & iphone 13 are what I'm using. I called Apple and the guy said this was normal but not new with the software update (although my phone didn't start this until I updated it). itunes software is also the most recent version (12.12.16.1). So, is there some way around this? Thanks.

This is the same passcode that is used to access the device when it restarts, and every couple of days when Face ID wants the passcode again.
