Problem adding scanner

I'm trying to add a Canon MG6100 as a scanner on my MacBook Pro. It is already set up as a printer. When I go to add a scanner the menu only allows me to add a printer.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.2

you could try using either Preview or Image capture, both of which are built into the Mac OS.

if you navigate to system preferences, then printers and scanners, where you see a [+] and a [-] button, if you hold down the option key, and click on the [+{ button, you should see “ reset printing system’ try that. You can also remove + re-add the mg 6100. Lastly, try disconnecting the power cord from the printer then shutting down your mac. Disconnect the power cord to it for about a minute. Then plug it in, press the power button and immediately hold down apple, option, p and r keys together for 3-4 chimes, bongs or apple logo disappearances. Let go of those keys and let your mac start up as per usual.. after it has started up , then plug i the power cord to your printer and let it start up.. i think if you if have 2 canon printers to print from, as it seems you do, you should run canon network utility.. and give each a seperate ip address, assuming both are on the same basic network as your mac...

you’ve tapped me out of ideas for today. My ‘ canon’ is out of gunpowder and canon balls..

The updates you sent me didn't exactly solve my problem. I still cannot set up my Canon MG6100 printer as a scanner though I used to be able to do this. But now the printer and scanner preferences recognizes a second printer on my network which is a Canon TS6200 and when this printer is selected it allows me to select it either as a printer or a scanner which the 6100 does not. So now I can scan from the 6200. Thanks very much! The problem I seem to have with the 6100 is that when I try to add a printer/scanner in system preferences the dialog box only seems to allow adding a printer not a scanner. It recognizes the 6100 but won't set it up as a scanner.

Hi John b - Thanks very much for working with me on this. I still am not having much success getting my MG6120 to work as a scanner with my MacBook Pro on my home network. But as long as I can use our other printer, the TS6220, I'm okay. Maybe the problem is that when I switched to Big Sur from Catalina some of the Canon software is not compatible. When I try to open MP Navigator EX 4.0 I get a message that the software needs to be updated but on the Canon network I cannot find an update. Frankly I'm a little afraid to try the unplugging and restarting suggestion as I'm afraid I may not be able to get the 6120 to work even as a printer. So I'll just live with this setup. Thanks again for all your help.

Ahh... i think you’re onto something there... canon sez ‘’my image garden” , which is, after all, Canon software/application or works with Canon scanners... should work...MP Navigator EX looks like it’s for Windows..ah, but wait !!! Hold the phone!! Stop the presses !!!

here’s the latest version of that, for

Mac, and it supports Catalina !!!
