Iphone 12 pro max with Applecar play USB connection Mitsubishi Pajero 2018

I want to understand if the iphone 12 pro still works with USB connection for Apple carplay on a Mitsubishi Pajero 2018 model. Reading through older threads there was a connection issue with some cars and USD ports but was hoping that someone may know the answer to this query.

No point buying a new phone if it does not connect to Apple carplay via the USB as bluetooth is not an option.

Any advise will be appreciated.
