Square marks on the screen

These are marks that you get on the screen from the keyboard pressing up against the screen when the computer is closed. Take a soft cloth and get it damp and wipe them off the screen. You'll see that they wipe off and go away. Then when you close the computer, you'll see that they most likely come back. Maybe not right away, but they will return because the screen is coming in contact with the keyboard keys when the computer is closed.

There’s not much clearance between the keys and the screen, and Macs that get (too) compressed perpendicular to the keyboard when closed can show this. There might not or won’t be any damage to the lid.

I’ve seen some carrying cases and bags that are too tight, and sometimes carrying bags get squashed and rubbed when packed, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see this happen when the MacBook or MacBook Pro is carried by squeezing it (too) firmly.

Another possibly is a cleaner that’s been used with the keyboard that’s somehow incompatible with the display or its coating. Apple has specific recommendations here: How to clean your Apple products - Apple Support

Your choices are to either live with the display artifact, get the display replaced, or replace the Mac.

[There’s also an Apple patent for retractable keyboard keys, interestingly enough. US patent 10,957,501]

Looks like dirty keys have left a ghost imprint onto the screen..

in this way no harm in registering random key input.

If the square marks physically line up with the keyboard keys, that look to be grunge transferred over onto the display from the keyboard or wear from the display being pressed against and contacting with the keyboard when closed. The reported red streaks seem more like a graphics hardware problem, though. Time to discuss this directly with the folks at Apple. Use the Get Support link in the upper right, and start a service request.
