CarPlay not working with iPhone SE

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately here for some help with a problem.

I am trying to get my iPhone SE set-up with CarPlay in my car....yes I know the SE is getting old, but I own it, and it works really well (except for this one problem).

My partner can connect her iPhone 11 without issue, but no matter what I try, my SE just won't talk. My brother has the same radio as me, but an iPhone SE2, his works great!

I'm running iOS 14.4.

Sony XAV-AX3000 radio unit with latest firmware.

I have factory reset my radio, checked Siri and USB Accessory settings in iOS, and reset network settings just in case.

Have tired both genuine Apple and aftermarket cables.

No matter what I do, always getting "USB Device Not Supported" on the radio. But my iPhone does continue to charge.

Short of buying a whole new iPhone, or trying factory reset of the iPhone, not sure what else to try.

Has anyone else had similar issues or have any suggestions?

Thanks for getting back to us about this, Kosmro. If the previous troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, let’s keep investigating together. Since other iPhones can connect to your vehicle through CarPlay, the vehicle setup is likely okay. Are you able to test your iPhone with another vehicle temporarily? Perhaps your brother’s vehicle, as you mentioned having the same radio?

Please also try the following steps, any of which may help:

      • Verify there is no case on the iPhone that might be causing interference, affecting how the Lightning cable seats, or that might be between the iPhone and stereo USB connection (e.g. a battery pack).
      • Ensure CarPlay is not restricted in Settings > General > CarPlay as well as Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
      • Forget the iPhone from the settings (stereo user guide for instructions).
      • Rename the iPhone in Settings > General > About > Name.
      • Try to test with a shorter Apple approved Lightning cable.
      • If no shorter cable is available test with another Apple approved Lightning cable.
      • Power on the vehicle and allow the stereo to fully wake before connecting the iPhone.
      • Try a different USB port, if another is available.
      • If car stereo supports Bluetooth, try connecting via Bluetooth, instead of using the USB.

Please let us know the results of this testing. We’re here to help get this resolved. Cheers!

Hello again, kosmro! We're glad to see that you were so thorough with your troubleshooting. We definitely understand that this is a critical issue for you and want to keep looking into this. While taking the steps yesterday, were you able to test your iPhone with another vehicle? That would be an excellent step to take, so we can confirm the issue is 100% tied to your device and not some possible configuration with the car.

Also, to answer your question, we do offer a diagnostic test that can be run with an Apple support agent, over the phone or through chat, or at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Let us know when you are able to test in another vehicle if possible and we can look into getting your iPhone a diagnostic test.

We'll be right here. Thanks and take care.

Hello, kosmro!

After reviewing your post, it seems like you are running into some issues using your iPhone SE with CarPlay. We definitely understand that not having full access to that feature can be a concern and we'd love to help. Your iPhone is compatible with CarPlay, so let’s start by reviewing this article: If you need help with CarPlay.

Please let us know if you have follow-up questions about this issue, or if the issue remains unresolved. Have a great day!

Hi Gena,

Thank you for your detailed response.

I stepped through each of your check points; iPhone name set to just "iPhone" and tested with official cable, 3rd party cable at 1.5m and 15cm. Tested those cables with my partner's iPhone 11 to confirm they worked.

Factory reset my iPhone out of frustration, set-up as new phone, checked each of the above solution checks again, still no dice.

I know it's an older phone at this point, by this is the only thing that does not work on it and is kind of a major issue for me.

I don't know if there's any way to check and confirm hardware issues - thoughts?
