Migration from macBook to Air leaves duplicate user account

I had a macBook Pro with a battery that failed and couldn't be replaced. It had a single user account John. I bought a new MacBook Air, ran setup and had a single user account "John Smith". I ran migration, it took forever but looks like everything was correctly copied onto the new computer. I am no left with 2 user accounts - John which has all my data and John Smith which appears to be an empty user account. I went to delete the user account John Smith but it prompted me to turn off "find my mac" on my appleid. that made me nervous so I quit.

Can I safely delete the account that was created when I installed my new computer? if so, how can I connect my appleid to the new account if I do delete it?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Removing this Administrator:

Just create a new administrator account. Once created, log out of the current user, and then log in to the new administrator account, setting up the Apple ID on it. Enable Find My when you set up the account during the first login of the user account. Once all is transferred, remove the current account you do not need. All should be set from there.

Important:

Backup First: Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the account set up.

If you do not use the Setup Assistant while first setting up the new device, it will automatically create an account. Then, when you use Migration Assistant later, it will port over your old account and create a mess. Creating another account is not the answer and may create more of a mess. You can either painstakingly go through everything and delete duplicates or - faster - simply wipe and start over from. scratch. After the OS is downloaded and during the install/setup, use the Setup Assistant (which is only offered once) - it will port everything over without creating duplicates. I made this same mistake years ago and, after trying to clean things up for several days and accepted the advice of a long time member here - started over and it worked just fine.
