MacBook Air M1 randomly shutting down

I have had my MacBook Air with M1 chip almost a week now and I was sitting here reading a webpage when the MacBook just shut off randomly and rebooted. It is operating off of AC power right now. I have a USB C hub plugged in that powers my mouse and ethernet and sometimes an external display. I only have plugged in what I am using at the time. This concerns me because this MacBook Air is replacing a 2010 MacBook Pro that was doing the same thing.

Yes, this is happening to me too!! I thought it might be the Apple adapter that is connecting my MacBook Air M1 2020 to the external monitor, but tried a different adapter and it does the same thing.. random, no warning, and not always if the laptop has been on for long, sometimes just a few hours, screen goes pink and then shuts down the external monitor and then the laptop - only other devices connected are a bluetooth apple keyboard and bluetooth apple smart mouse and the USB charge cable via the 2nd USB port - This did not ever happen with the previous laptop i was using the macbook pro 15". maybe this macbook Air is just not suitable to be used for extend periods, though it is on a stand that allows air flow all around it - see picture and attached is the crash report in "additional text"

Thanks for getting back with us, tlangejr. We want to do everything we can to help with this and alleviate some of your frustration. Testing your Mac without any external peripherals connected is an excellent next step, so we can rule out one of them causing this behavior. If the issues persist, we advice that you reinstall the macOS software: How to reinstall macOS. You will not have to lose any of your software intros process.

Thought things were different with this new hub from Twelve South, but then this happened a few minutes ago. This is the first time it has shut down like this since I got the new hub. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I just bought my MacBookAir M1 in March, so it is still under warranty.

Same here. I've had the M1 for just over two weeks. It randomly shuts down when I:

  • Plug in to my external monitor
  • Awake the laptop while it's connected to the external monitor

Note: If I plug in the external monitor while the laptop lid is open, it doesn't restart. It only seems to happen when the lid is closed.

My external monitor is the Apple approved LG UltraFine 5k 27".

It's actually a very frustrating issue, especially given that it's happening with a monitor that had Apple's approval stamp.

Guys!

Problem solved!

My Air M1 went to repair. They found a problem and change the mainboard. No costs.

Im using now and everything is running fine.

Im not using this adapter too. Some users said air m1 fries with this.

Thanks to apple and everyone here!

I reviewed the article and there is no warning when the MacBook Air will shut down. In fact, I was on a website and it shut down without any warning. What I am noticing is that it only does this if the MacBook is connected to the USB hub and the external display is also connected. I am not receiving any warning messages when the computer reboots. I had this similar phenomenon with my MacBook Pro 2010 15inch and just thought it was the age and lack of updates for MacOS. I am very concerned since I recently upgraded to this new M1 machine and this is happening all over again. I am hoping that it is the USB-C hub and that I probably should return the one I currently am using. The USB-C hub that I currently have is the UTech Smart 6 in 1 USB-C hub that I purchased from Amazon. Any recommendations on a USB-C hub? At minimum, I need an ethernet port and some USB ports (two) and an HDMI port for my external display. I have also considered trying to find a HDMI to UBS-C adapter or HDMI to Thunderbolt and bypass the UBS-C hub for the display only and see if that resolves the issue.

Any and all recommendations are appreciated at this point. Very frustrated

Hi again, tlangejr. That sounds like a great plan. We are glad to hear that you went all day without any issues too! One step closer to figuring this out. We'll be here when you are ready to proceed, after your testing.

Thanks again and take care!

Tested it for two days with mouse and power, ethernet, and HDMI plugged in and have not had a restart in two days. I am currently using my LG Ultrawide 29WK508 monitor and not having any issues. I will keep using over the next week to see if I have any unexpected shutdowns and restarts. Thanks for the assist. I will update in a week or sooner if something does happen. I also checked and I am running MacOS Big Sur 11.2.3 which is the latest update.

I've had the same issue. I have a dongle that I got off Amazon with good reviews for my new MacBook Air M1. I use the dongle all the time for the HDMI, power, keyboard/mouse usb dongle. I spoke with apple support and was told it could be a power management issue. Maybe the dongle is requiring too much power. I've also noticed that my usb dongle based keyboard/mouse plugged into my main dongle has such a poor connection. The keyboard basically has to be right in front of the usb dongle. So maybe its not getting enough power.

When mine cuts off, the external screen will hold the page for a second but the MacBook screen turns black and purple. Then it restarts and says it was a kernel panic.

Now I am trying to decide whether maybe I should get a powered dock port.

I have the same problem and it scares me as well. I use external monitor and I use many bluetooth devices if that can be related since sometimes I have a problem with bluetooth. Bluetooth devices start lagging and then all disconnects. After a few seconds they start connecting back. Hopefully these both issues are not physical problems but just some system/software problem and hopefully fixes will be released soon.

I bought the M1 in March and had it connected to an external monitor, it would always just turn off. I got a new in April and there, it happened only every now and then. I could live with not having an external monitor, which i thought was the issue. Not after 2 months, I have nothing(!!) connected to the M1 and it just shutt off, pink screen and all that. It is terrible!!

Customer support is not really helping because I could only see if it is happening with the testing user account and re-install MacOS. Well, I know that it will just happen again. It happened before with a different M1, so it is obviously not "our fault" but the system's.

I just hope Apple can fix this problem with a new software update. Expensive computers should not have these issues.

I am now on my second MacBook Air M1 in one week, and have the exact same problem with two different usb-c dongles and an external monitor (original Apple adapters). Will suddenly turn off, even with 100% battery, and will only show 5% battery when plugged in again. On my newest MacBook I also got the pink pixels before turning off.
