MacBook Air M1 randomly shutting down

I have had my MacBook Air with M1 chip almost a week now and I was sitting here reading a webpage when the MacBook just shut off randomly and rebooted. It is operating off of AC power right now. I have a USB C hub plugged in that powers my mouse and ethernet and sometimes an external display. I only have plugged in what I am using at the time. This concerns me because this MacBook Air is replacing a 2010 MacBook Pro that was doing the same thing.

+ 1 on this method!

I had exactly the same issue like others here: Macbook M1 unexpected restarts with pink screen, and the crash report says CPU panic etc. Contacted Apple support since the first month I after purchased and tried a few things they recommended such as Safe Mode, re install Mac OS, run Diagnostic but these did not help. The Authorised Apple repair shop said it was the faulty of Main Logic board.

I had my MacBook replaced but the issue continues within a week of using the new model. The Apple supervisor recon that there was some data I had transfer ( using Migration assistant ) from my 2016 Macbook Pro to my M1 Macbook that the data might not support the new operating system. She recommended me to erase my laptop and manually reinstall the softwares fresh with the current apps and programs that I need.

This is my 2nd week of no crashing, no restarting and hopefully it stays that way.

Same issue (nothing connected and shutting down randomly) I ended up taking it to an apple store, and the tech said it's a logic board problem. So he suggested to return the unit, which was just over 2 weeks old refurbished from Apple. The issue is when you press the power button it turns it off (it's supposed to put the mac to sleep). AND holding down the power key does not boot up the recovery screen. Definitely was a lemon and it missed the quality control. I've been buying refurbished from apple a few times already and this was the first one that had an issue.

I have the exact same issue with the m1 macbook pro. i.e. random moments of occasional computer freezes - pink screen for a moment, and then restart. Only happens when using the USB C ports.

The people claiming that the issue goes away when the power is plugged directly into one of the USB C ports, with the rest of the peripherals plugged through a hub - does this solution still stand? i will give it a try, hopefully it resolves the issue.

The support i have received from apple on this issue has been really unacceptable.

Hello everyone!

I found a solution that allows you to connect your monitor to your MacBook Air M1 without lags or any problems.

Apple, I'm sorry, but when you connect an external monitor via Samsung Cable Type C to HDMI (not advertising), everything has been working great for over a week. No lags, no freezes like when using Apple USB Type-C HDMI.

I think that my experience will help many who connect the display and get problems.

Apple will probably say that you should deinstall the current system and then reinstall it or use the safe mode to figure out if it is an issue particular to your laptop. Which seems ridiculous because so many people have this issue. I also dont want to waste my programming softwares as I need to always get a new license (even with backup)

Yes, this is happening to me too!! I thought it might be the Apple adapter that is connecting my MacBook Air M1 2020 to the external monitor, but tried a different adapter and it does the same thing.. random, no warning, and not always if the laptop has been on for long, sometimes just a few hours, screen goes pink and then shuts down the external monitor and then the laptop - only other devices connected are a bluetooth apple keyboard and bluetooth apple smart mouse and the USB charge cable via the 2nd USB port - This did not ever happen with the previous laptop i was using the macbook pro 15". maybe this macbook Air is just not suitable to be used for extend periods, though it is on a stand that allows air flow all around it - see picture and attached is the crash report in "additional text"

Yep, it happened to me a lot with external monitors attached and one without anything attached. I am also scared that this happens during conferences or something important. I put everything one OneDrive now like Microsoft Office so that everything is immediately saved in case it does crash again. No one from Apple here is actually reading this here I guess?

My only hope is that since so many people deal with this issue (MacBook Air or Pro), it might only be the M1 macbooks and that it can be fixed with an update .. whenever that will happen.

It is seriously terrible customer service. People were telling me here before that I dont need to buy Apple products if I am that unhappy with it. Well, I was not. My old MacBook did not crash once in years. But obviously I am complaining when this happens with the new one and I even got a different one with which it also happens.

I called the support people before (in Germany) and they told me to put in on save mode to see if it is something I installed (yeah sure) and if it still happens, I can send it in and they will have a look at it. But it is probably not the hardware because so many people have this issue (I had two M1 macbooks and it happened with both). But maybe one should call and say that we know it happens to a lot of people and could hopefully be fixed with an update. Here, customer support acted like they have never heard of the issue
