MacBook Air M1 randomly shutting down

I have had my MacBook Air with M1 chip almost a week now and I was sitting here reading a webpage when the MacBook just shut off randomly and rebooted. It is operating off of AC power right now. I have a USB C hub plugged in that powers my mouse and ethernet and sometimes an external display. I only have plugged in what I am using at the time. This concerns me because this MacBook Air is replacing a 2010 MacBook Pro that was doing the same thing.

+ 1 on this method!

I had exactly the same issue like others here: Macbook M1 unexpected restarts with pink screen, and the crash report says CPU panic etc. Contacted Apple support since the first month I after purchased and tried a few things they recommended such as Safe Mode, re install Mac OS, run Diagnostic but these did not help. The Authorised Apple repair shop said it was the faulty of Main Logic board.

I had my MacBook replaced but the issue continues within a week of using the new model. The Apple supervisor recon that there was some data I had transfer ( using Migration assistant ) from my 2016 Macbook Pro to my M1 Macbook that the data might not support the new operating system. She recommended me to erase my laptop and manually reinstall the softwares fresh with the current apps and programs that I need.

This is my 2nd week of no crashing, no restarting and hopefully it stays that way.

Same here. I've had the M1 for just over two weeks. It randomly shuts down when I:

  • Plug in to my external monitor
  • Awake the laptop while it's connected to the external monitor

Note: If I plug in the external monitor while the laptop lid is open, it doesn't restart. It only seems to happen when the lid is closed.

My external monitor is the Apple approved LG UltraFine 5k 27".

It's actually a very frustrating issue, especially given that it's happening with a monitor that had Apple's approval stamp.

I purchased the M1 last year and this issue has been consistently getting worst, not sure if it is hardware-related or software. Just for context, I purchased my M1 in Canada around Christmas last year, as a means of upgrading from my old MacBook Air.

It unexpectedly restarts, the screen goes to black and the bottom/mid-right side of the screen shows blocks of purple/pink and then restarts into the login screen. Every time I file the report and hope to see a patch/update, but has been over 9 months and the issue still exists.

Edit: this shutdown occurs regardless of what I'm doing, whether I'm using one app/multiple, whether I'm typing in Word or using a streaming service

i also have the new MacBook Pro 13' and its randomly restarting- i use a dongle as well and sometime without and it still happens- it does supply me an error- here the first part of it:

i have taken it to the local agents here in SA and they re-installed the OS and its still doing it. I have no strange 3rd party Apps or SW and i use the basic MS-Office and standard stock SW- this is very disappointing as i was expecting a better experience. Can anyone shed some light on the type of error i am getting?

Thank you

I reviewed the article and there is no warning when the MacBook Air will shut down. In fact, I was on a website and it shut down without any warning. What I am noticing is that it only does this if the MacBook is connected to the USB hub and the external display is also connected. I am not receiving any warning messages when the computer reboots. I had this similar phenomenon with my MacBook Pro 2010 15inch and just thought it was the age and lack of updates for MacOS. I am very concerned since I recently upgraded to this new M1 machine and this is happening all over again. I am hoping that it is the USB-C hub and that I probably should return the one I currently am using. The USB-C hub that I currently have is the UTech Smart 6 in 1 USB-C hub that I purchased from Amazon. Any recommendations on a USB-C hub? At minimum, I need an ethernet port and some USB ports (two) and an HDMI port for my external display. I have also considered trying to find a HDMI to UBS-C adapter or HDMI to Thunderbolt and bypass the UBS-C hub for the display only and see if that resolves the issue.

Any and all recommendations are appreciated at this point. Very frustrated

Tested it for two days with mouse and power, ethernet, and HDMI plugged in and have not had a restart in two days. I am currently using my LG Ultrawide 29WK508 monitor and not having any issues. I will keep using over the next week to see if I have any unexpected shutdowns and restarts. Thanks for the assist. I will update in a week or sooner if something does happen. I also checked and I am running MacOS Big Sur 11.2.3 which is the latest update.

I have the same problem and it scares me as well. I use external monitor and I use many bluetooth devices if that can be related since sometimes I have a problem with bluetooth. Bluetooth devices start lagging and then all disconnects. After a few seconds they start connecting back. Hopefully these both issues are not physical problems but just some system/software problem and hopefully fixes will be released soon.

I bought the M1 in March and had it connected to an external monitor, it would always just turn off. I got a new in April and there, it happened only every now and then. I could live with not having an external monitor, which i thought was the issue. Not after 2 months, I have nothing(!!) connected to the M1 and it just shutt off, pink screen and all that. It is terrible!!

Customer support is not really helping because I could only see if it is happening with the testing user account and re-install MacOS. Well, I know that it will just happen again. It happened before with a different M1, so it is obviously not "our fault" but the system's.

I just hope Apple can fix this problem with a new software update. Expensive computers should not have these issues.

It happened to me again! I already started forgetting about it and this time it was shut down without any external devices and even no bluetooth devices. I only connected my iPhone with Personal Hotspot. This is ridiculous having shut down during important call! Can anyone from support give any updates what is happening and will it be possible to fix somehow?
