MacBook Pro running MacOs 11.2.3 doesn't recognise my WD My Passport for Mac hard drive

My MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)) running MacOs 11.2.3 no longer recognises my WD My Passport for Mac hard drive.

This started after 8 years of regular back-up use (once a month) after updating the MacOs (to 11.2 I think or 11.2.1). I acquired a new cable, in case that was the cause, the green light appears on the back and I can feel the drive working. The USB port is fine as it takes other devices. Any ideas?

To be honest I don't know the external file system - it could well be HFS+ if that was standard before the move to Big Sur as my MacBook ran High Sierra. So, how do I re-initiate and change the file system to APFS. There is nothing I need to retrieve from my previous back-ups, so starting backups from scratch again using APFS is fine for me. Thanks
