app store update page looks strange

In the last couple of days it seems that my update page in App Store is missing its stylesheet. The update page (and only that) is looking strange. Sometimes it helps to shut the app and open it again after a minute - sometimes NOT.

What could be the reason?

I am running High Sierra on a 2017 iMac

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.12

Call done, the support representative has been very kind and acknowledged that this issue is likely to be server side.

She also noticed that even yesterday she saw some clients on High Sierra with this issue but she didn't think it was a widespread issue until my call.

She told me that she will raise the issue internally and suggested me to fill in a feedback report through apple.com/feedback, too, in order to prioritise the issue.

However, she told me to not expect a super fast resolution since macOS High Sierra is not actively supported by Apple anymore and currently only obsolete or vintage Macs cannot update to a more recent macOS version.

So, folks still on High Sierra, let's open Apple Support tickets and report this issue on Apple's feedback page!

There have been updates done with the page looking funny, apps have been updated. There have been no updates for a month or so now. Here is a way to check for OS updates, only security, no app updates, can be done using Terminal.

1). Open Terminal.app

2). Type softwareupdate -l then hit <enter> This will list all available updates.

3). To install all updates type softwareupdate -i -a --restart then hit <enter> This will install all available updates and then automatically restart.

4). After a reboot, follow step 2 and 3 again until no more updates are available.

This works, unless there is nothing to update.

Someone who maintains those Apple update servers messed up… and they probably don't have a backup of the CSS file s/he deleted, nor do they want to bother putting in the hours to go looking for this file that is probably only 80 KB in size to make us all happy.

It's waaaaaaaaaaay down on the priority list.

Basically the updating still works even though the pages look like crud, so they don't care to invest the time.

Maybe now that WWDC is over we can pray this finally makes its way up the ticketing cue.

We hope… but don't hold your breath.

I have the same problem on three Mac desktops and one MacBook Pro – all running High Sierra. The failure to load CSS styles only occurs in the Updates tab of App Store. Is this due to a new Content Security Policy or a Mixed Content issue that High Sierra cannot satisfy or process? If so, why do the other tabs load CSS flawlessly? I.e. Featured, Top Charts and Purchased.

My Late 2011 macbook prohas been this way for a while- I thought something was wrong with my computer and has reinstalled high sierra several times- but no fix. Just paid to have my computer wipesd- spent countless hours transferring important data/photos- and paying $$$ and still is the same😡 it is also like that on my imac 2012. Very frustrating and makes me want to switch away from apple!!

Same problem here with 3 different machines (MacBook Pro i7 15", 2015 - iMac i7 27", 2011 - Mac Pro 12 cores, 2013) all running the latest High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G14042) as of 2021. It just happened one day, out of the blue even after fresh installation. It surely is a component in the latest update that won't cope well with the App Store's new features...

I hopped the wagon and opened a ticket too!

Let's hope.

Cheers, Sam.

Just finished providing similar feedback at - https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos.html

Reads as follows:

MacOS High Sierra - App Store - Updates page not formatting correctly.

I manage 5 macOS based Macs at home. All running High Sierra, as 2 of the devices are MBP 17" 2011 models and H/S is the latest macOS supported. I find it easier to keep things the same. The other 3 are iMac 27". 1 is 2013 model, the other 2 are 2015 5k models.

The App Store app was recently updated on 1 of the 5k iMacs - my main Mac. This is the one which has the complete mess for the update software tab of the App Store app now.

It looks like a web page that has not finished rendering.

I understand others have reported this. I just want to add my voice to the fact, that this is not an isolated occurrence.

Hope it helps.

Same issue here on Mac Mini Mid 2011, running final version of High Sierra 10.13.6 with Security Update 2020-006 (17G14042) released November 12, 2020.

See screen shot and logs below.

Apple, please resolve this issue on the server end.

It seems this is still going on as of May 14th, but I don't believe it's any kind of "server" issue. I use to work for Apple Inc. (not store) and you'll can get a different story every time - depending on who you talk with. ;-)

I have several Macs but it's been a while since I've used the one I'm on now. Similar model, but OLDER.

[27"/ 3.4ghz / i7/ 32gb ram - macOS High Sierra ]

(BTW, Boy... I don't know why you're not running a newer macOS on yours though? You can. I would!! :-)

Rather than any kind of "server" issue messing with the App Store UI - I suspect hardware and/or software. All my other Macs are not doing this, older and newer models. Plus... all the other areas of the Mac App Store are just fine for me. I think it's going to take a little more sleuthing and trouble shooting.

My weird "boxed" update buttons and check boxes are working though. I was able just able to download one of my updates. Back to the drawing board.

(preface - I wrote a book but deleted/edited it. Maybe I’ll post it in its entirety later.)

I really didn’t understand the post since it seems it’s been established the issue is with high Sierra and older Macs. Upgrading to a different macOS is one of the first things to check so I didn’t see the context.

My update button works fine and I’ve stated so before. It should also be known Apple has all its macOS versions available for direct download listed out on a single page without having to find a particular versions own page. That way you can also see if there’s any subsequent follow up downloads or combo-downloads.

Mostly, new users shouldn’t be worried or afraid of doing a simple update/upgrade. The operative word being - “simple” because Apple… really has made the regular process of it simple.

.. that… is a much, MUCH shorter version of my post.
