App Store "Updates" looks very wrong

I'm on a mid-2012 Mac Pro (model MacPro5,1) running the latest version of macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). I have not installed any updates since March 31, 2021.

Yesterday (April 7, 2021), I received notification that an update is available, so I opened App Store with the intention of reviewing an installing updates. The Updates tab of App Store is very messed up, as shown in the attached screenshot. I've tried deleting plists, clearing caches, signing out/in, and other suggestions that I found via a Google search. But I'm stumped. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Apple support suggested that I reinstall macOS 10.13.6, which I did following the instructions at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904. That did not fix the problem, and got me escalated to a tier 1 specialist.

The tier 1 specialist said that she had several reports of this today. We verified that the problem occurs in Safe Mode. This got me escalated to a tier 2 specialist.

While speaking with the tier 2 specialist, I remembered that I have an older MacBook Pro running macOS 10.11.6. This same problem occurs on that device. And there have been no changes to that device is months. So I have 2 older (and different) versions of macOS that spontaneously developed this problem.

On my wife's MacBook Pro running Catalina, there is no problem. On my newer MacBook Pro running Big Sur, there is no problem (and no Updates tab in App Store.)

So here's my theory about what is happening. The Updates tab contacts an Apple server, which responds with markup - probably HTML + CSS. I'll bet that markup is not being tested for older version of macOS, and is now broken. If App Store can't understand the markup (probably the CSS), then that would explain why it looks like a bad HTML page. It's doing its best to display HTML that it doesn't understand.

The tier 2 specialist said that there's nothing more he can do for me, and suggested that I post in this forum. It seems like I'll need to either wait for Apple to fix the problem (either on their server or via a patch), or live with an ugly Updates tab.

@steve626, what leads you to "belief". Is there a statement from Apple to say that the behaviour is expected? Or is it from your personal experience?

Evidently @BDAqua concurs with you, however @ChrisPixelZoom says he spoke with Tier 1 and Tier 2 Apple support with neither of them suggesting that the behaviour was normal for unsupported versions.

I have a 2008 iMac that has great nostalgic value to me (plus it has a built in DVD burner which is kind of convenient at times) but it is maxed out at El Capitan and as time goes by, more and more things require workarounds because browsers, web pages, apps don't run properly. This is clearly starting to happen with High Sierra, which is the highest MacOS for machines which are 10 years old or more. I have one of those also, a MacBook Air 2010, on High Sierra, a beautiful machine that, like the iMac, is very snappy with an internal SSD. But I had to buy a new machine because neither of the older Macs can run the tax software I needed this year.

I’m in the same boat—not so much because of hardware but because of software: I need to be able to run Abobe CS6. Not nay is my App Store messed up, but I am also noticing these other problems that developed about the same time (about a month ago):

—Copy/Paste commands no longer work in iTunes, Safari, Firefox, or between those three apps (weirdly it still works in chrome)

—Finder no longer provides thumbnails for even the most basic files, and cannot figure out how to open them (mp3 files no longer open automatically in iTunes, jpgs no longer default to Preview)

—GarageBand projects now save as folders that GarageBand cannot open.

I feel like there is a connection between these problems that I just can’t see, involving file-organization and inter-operability. Most apps seem to work fine, if you overlook the copy/paste problem. I’m not a conspiracy-minded guy, and I have been a Mac user since 1987, but this all seems pretty fishy to me.

I Just Got An Early 2015 MacBook Air, And I Believe This Problem Is Effecting My OS Updater, I've got Mac OS 10.12 Sierra and everytime I get the notification to update to Catalina it does nothing and the options to update literally isn't there, and same way with my Late 2011 iMac Running Max OS 10.13.6 High Sierra The store looks broken like this on both my Mac's, how can this problem be out for so long and not to be addressed by Apple months ago?

why is it that it's been a few months and the problem is still present in 2021 (Jun 21st) it won't let me update to Catalina because of this problem and I have way too many app incapabilities due to this problem if there's a way around this problem please reply! Anyone

It is not a server problem, it is a greed problem. Apple wants our older hardware to become obsolete so that we are forced to buy new hardware. There is no "pushing up" or "prioritizing" that which Apple is well aware of and has designed to occur. Over time, you will find that more and more functions no longer function.
