Hi Ian Aldous,
Once DVD-R has been burned, it cannot be erased digitally. If you need its contents gone, your best bet is too physically destroy it.
This is also why you should move forward, if you haven't already, to a more modern storage solution.

It has always been the case the writeable DVDs and CDs cannot be erased. They simply do not have that ability. I also agree with Jack, it would be wise to upgrade to more contemporary storage solution.
