I have had the same issue and was able to bypass it by going to settings/Audible. Turn OFF Allow Audible to Access Media & Apple Music. Restart your audible app and now you can turn off you screen and use audible the same way as before the update.

Turning off Sleep Mode isn't a fix, it's just a workaround. Audible should still continue to play after the screen goes to sleep, or locking the phone. - Why would you want your screen to stay on, depleating your battery?

I've disabled Access to Media and Apple Music. I'm hoping this will cure the problem. - I don't really understand why Audible would need access to Apple Music or other media anyway...

Hi everyone - I am the original poster of this topic. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions but as of today none of these solutions have been permanent for me. The app continues to fail me. The original problem is mostly resolved, although intermittently it happens. The app locks up on my iPhone and I have to continually reinstall it. It stops playing downloaded books intermittently when I am not connected to the wifi. Pretty much everything that can go wrong, does. I'm going to get on the phone with Audible again but I am considering cancelling my subscription if this can't be resolved.

I went through these steps, hard to say if it worked or not given how intermittent the issue has been though. One point of clarification this step:

"2. Tap the Profile button at the bottom of the screen.

3.At the bottom of the screen, where the version, applications name and marketplace show..."

For me I had to go to Profile then Settings (Gear icon in the top right of profile page) then to the bottom to find the app info to hold on.
