cannot get catalina to show up in the app store. from what I've seen, I should be good to upgrade with my mid2012 MacBook pro. Any suggestions?

Have you tried System Preferences/Software Update? For some reason, the App Store didn't show macOS upgrades for me, either.
FWIW, System Preferences > Software Update doesn't exist in High Sierra.
That link works.
1) For some reason "software upgrade" is not even listed in my System Preferences.
2) I see Big Sur in the app store but I'm fairly sure my older MacBook does not support it.
Wish me luck.

Of course. :)

That's because it was first added in Mojave 10.14.

Big Sur requires a Late 2013 or newer MacBook Pro.

You're welcome.
