Big Sur Volume Control Changes the R/L balance of AirPods

Mac Book Pro 2019 Big Sur, First Generation AirPods.

There are three ways to adjust volume, 1. Sound Menu, 2. TouchBar 3. From within iTunes. I thought I was going deaf in my left ear, until I worked out that adjusting the volume through the sound menu next to the Bluetooth icon always shifts the audio balance to the right. Using the Touch Bar or adjusting the volume from within iTunes does not do this.

Is there a work around for this irritating behaviour? Thanks to anyone that replies.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.2

Erica,

Thank you very much for your kind and helpful reply, it is appreciated. The behaviour was only seen with the AirPods, I'm afraid I don't have any other Bluetooth headphones. The MacBook internal speakers could be adjusted without seeing this and an Airplay connection to an Airport and hence to an amplifier did not do this either.

I followed the advice to reset the AirPods and magic the behaviour has gone. I have to confess that I don't really understand the logic behind this manoeuvre but it has worked,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with volume changes adjusting the balance on your AirPods, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

If you use the speakers on your MacBook Pro, do you experience the same issue?

What about with other Bluetooth headphones?

If this only occurs with AirPods connected, reset your AirPods, and test again.
