Other occupying GB's worth of space on Macbook
Dear Community,
I write to you in extreme sense of pain, sadness and frustration with Apple. I don't understand the whole storage philosophy of mac. I have tried to research potential answers to my questions but have failed to get a proper sense from the answers and comments I have seen thus far. My questions are as follows and would be glad if someone can help and guide me towards a reasonable answer and solution
This is my mac below
Questions:
- Why is this thing called 'Other' occupying so much space (at the moment it says 45 Gigs)? Please look at the screen shot below
- When I have purchased extra storage on iCloud, my sense was that whatever I store in iCloud at least will NOT occupy space on my local machine. But that is clearly not the case as can again be seen from the screen shot below. The iCloud Drive is occupying 10.8 Gigs. Isn't this ridiculous?
- I checked my ~/Library and do realize there's an awful lot of things there which are occupying space that I really don't understand
- Also I don't understand who these 'Other Users' are on my mac that are occupying 23 gigs of space! I am a single user of my mac.
- If I delete the data on my iCloud Drive on my local mac - will it end up deleting data on the iCloud itself? Is it safe to do so? This one I can check myself by deleting a few files from local iCloud drive and then checking the iCloud Store on Web to see the result but I am truly sick of managing this "Other" gobbling up so much space!
- Is there an Apple approved software that I can use to inspect, identify and remove Junk to free up space?
- I have not been able to upgrade to Mac OS Big Sur even while it keeps prompting me to upgrade but complains I have no space.
- I can assure you my needs are very simple and I just don't understand how can 120 gigs worth of space on my computer become so utterly useless
- Please help me with the above questions. You shall get my eternal gratefulness and I mean it. Even if I have to spend some dollars fixing this mess I will be happy to do so!
