Unable to open sibelius score file

I use Sibelius notation software. I have had this problem before, but it went away, now it is back again: I cannot edit a file to my desktop, although it will work if I open it in and save it to DropBox. The message I get is:

Unable to open score file / Users/drbquee/Desktop/... .sib for writing. Could this be a Mac problem?

Hello deb1806,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you've had some issues saving files from the Sibelius app to the desktop on your Mac. We'll do our best to assist with this.

Given you have no issues saving directly to DropBox, we'd say this might be due to iCloud syncing your Desktop & Documents. Check if this is enabled in System Preferences > iCloud > Desktop & Documents. If these files are storing in iCloud, they may not be compatible; hence why they are not saving properly.

If you haven't had issues in the past with saving to this location, make sure the app is up to date. You can check for app updates manually in the Mac App Store.

Double check that your user has permission to read and write to the Desktop folder: Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac

Should it persist, then we'd recommend contacting Sibelius' Support for more troubleshooting: Contact Sibelius Technical Support

Hope this helps out, take care!

Hi, Deborah. I'm no expert, but my experience is that syncing my Mac to both iCloud and Dropbox is unreliable and uses up too much space on my local drive.

Dropbox support told me not all Mac files will save properly to Dropbox because they're in "packages".

Apple support told me not all Mac files will save to iCloud because the macOS insists on keeping some things local.

What you end up with is fragmented files.

My solution has been to keep current projects local and backup to Time Machine continuously. I also save projects to an external SSD drive weekly.

I save files to iCloud if I want to use them on different devices connected to iCloud. AirDrop is useful, too.

I use Dropbox as an archive, only.

Sometimes files become corrupted. Time machine and external backups have saved me from losing work and time.

There is really useful support buried deep in the AVID Sibelius knowledge base, but you have to be patient and burrow long enough.

Good luck.

I have now discovered that I can save the sibelius files directly to my iCloud Drive, but not within any folders within the iCloud Drive. Below is a screenshot of the set-up. As you can see, there is a Sibelius file in my iCloud Drive. I tried saving it to the Desktop folder and the Documents folder, but got the same message as before.

Any ideas as to what's going on, please?

Deborah
