Volume control disabled on external display

When connected to my external display (Dell Ultrawide U3421WE) the volume control is disabled. The onboard speakers on the display are amazing and the issue is isolated to my MBP 13” m1. I understand that this could be a driver issue but Dell is diverting to Apple and Apple to Dell. I’ve read chatter online as this presents as a known issue but the apps suggested are either retired or homebrew in presentation. Does anyone know a fix? I’d prefer something native as I abhor bogging down my machine with unitasker apps that just want to advert me in the end. Thanks in advance. Nanna Fred ♥️

Unfortunately, there is no solution currently. You can suggest Apple institute DDC control of external monitors at apple.com/feedback. I've even emailed Tim Cook several times requesting the feature. It doesn't seem to be a priority with Apple. I could understand if they didn't sell a computer (Mac mini) without an external monitor, but the fact that they do sell a computer without a monitor means they should make this a priority.

I've read some bad reviews about some of the third-party apps that allow this. One distorted the audio, another took a guy months to figure out how to uninstall it, etc.

Apple really needs to come up with a solution for this. It affects a ton of external displays.
