Call Volume on iPhone 11 very low, need speakerphone to hear

On my iPhone 11 Pro, running software v. 14.4.2, I've recently noticed that the volume on calls is very low, and the person on the other end sounds faint/far away. There is no plastic screen protector on. I've run the diagnostics checking that:

  • Side mute/orange indicator button is not on/not muted.
  • Sound & Haptics - volume ringer/other sounds are normal
  • Cleaned top speaker where the sound is having the issue
  • Also cleaned mic/bottom speakers
  • Powered phone off/on
  • In Accessibility > Audio/Visual I turned off Noise Cancellation, and in >Hearing Devices, turned on Hearing Aid Compatibility.

After trying all these things the low call volume still persists. There has been no water damage to the phone or physical damage that might explain this.

Hello Amanda_H133,

We understand that the call volume is lower than expected, and we'd like to help.

It sounds like you've already done a lot of troubleshooting, and we have a few additional things we'd like to check and try to help narrow this issue down further.

  1. If you go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, is Voice & Data set to "LTE"? More about how to view and manage LTE settings here: About the LTE options on your iPhone
  2. Please adjust the volume balance all the way to the left or right. More about that under the "Adjust the volume balance and mono audio" part of this page: Adjust audio and visual settings on iPhone
  3. Once the volume balance has been adjusted, please go to Settings > Sound & Haptics > Ringtone, and tap on a ringtone to play it, and let us know if that changes anything. Select ringtones and vibrations on iPhone

Thanks!

Thanks so much for your reply and these new troubleshooting steps. So here's what I found:

1) Yes, my cellular data was set to LTE.

2) Unfortunately having the slider all the way right/left made no change in the low volume output from the earpiece.

3) The ringtones/music/other sounds have always been fine since they come from the bottom speakers. This issue is isolated only to the top earpiece speaker that I listen to calls on, so trying this made no difference.

Thanks for trying though! I'm worried it's a physical defect with the earpiece maybe?
