Can the airtag beep when walking away if I left my iPhone in the car?

Unfortunately, separation alarm is not possible due to hardware limitation: AirTag lucks a physical button (if you are thinking about Tile) so you won't be able to turn it off,

I 100% have keys with airtag in hand when leaving the car. Why should I have to wait until I get in my apartment to say where’s my iPhone? If the phone knows where my keys are, why can’t the airtag know I’m not near my phone?

Can the airtag owner disable the “beep on separation” feature temporarily? What if I put an airtag into a briefcase and then go away without the briefcase... will it sound the alarm? Is the alarm repeated until found?
This is a feature that would help keep people from leaving their ~$1000 phones behind when they get up from sitting. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will ever happen! Too much money in Apple Care and replacing lost and stolen phones. Too bad for those of us who live with people who can’t seem to NOT misplace things and leave things behind!
So what is airtag doing over and above tile? Besides maybe a better network of having other people helping to find your stuff?
i just want a way to ding my watch or airtag when I walk away from my phone at a time of my choosing. Not apple’s global timeout cloud setting. Tile doesn’t do it either btw.

Apple products have experienced very little change since release, so I guess that this won't be a feature anytime soon.
