sync calendar/contacts with iCloud versus iTunes

I use iTunes on a Windows 10 PC to sync my Outlook 365 Calendar and Contacts with my iPhone 8 calendar and contacts. Today I received the following message in iTunes: "Support for syncing contacts and calendars has been deprecated and will be removed in a future version of iTunes."

I think it is still syncing. My questions are as follows:

  1. Best option if I cannot use iTunes - Is it iCloud?
  2. If it is iCloud - will it duplicate all entries the first time I use iCloud to sync or does it recognize the two (iPhone calendar/contacts & PC based Outlook calendar/contacts) are already synced and just add/remove/change any differences? I have not used iCloud in past.

One last note: I sync both an iPhone and iPad Air with my Windows 10 PC.

Windows, Windows 10

Hi guys, I have updated my iPhone iOS to 14.7.1 but stopped the automatic updates of iTunes since the 'deprecated' message pops up. So far, it allows me to sync calendars and contacts from PC Win 10 to iPhone. But thanks for the tips in 'backdating' to a previous version of iTunes in case I need to replace my PC or reinstall iTunes. When the time comes, I'll try the other ways like companionlink. Definitely won't use iCloud.

I updated iTunes on my Win 10 64 machine to 12.11.4.15 yesterday and my iPhone and iPad still synced contacts and calendars both ways perfectly.

i also raised this issue months ago both here and through the direct suggestions/complaints route but nothing from Apple.

We wait with the “will be deprecated” message still annoyingly appearing

Just realized that I am no longer getting the "Support for syncing contacts and calendars has been deprecated and will be removed in a future version of iTunes." message. Not really sure if I accidentally selected the "Do not remind me again" option or not...but I've been fairly careful not to make that selection for the last few months.

iTunes version 12.11.4.15

iPhone XR running iOS 14.7.1

PC WIN 10 (64-bit)

Synchronization appears to still be occurring properly.

Thanks to all - esp. TT2 and APB1966

I am using the Microsoft App. store version of iTunes not the stand-alone.

Thinking ahead to my next laptop ... if I'm still an Apple customer,

I'll not want to install the current version of iTunes from the app store,

but .......................

Keeping a copy of the current app. store version seems to not be very easy....

I found one article on the woshub website... but is seems fairly complex.

I won't try to post a link as I expect it would get killed ....

Hoping for an easier way to save current version for the future ...

but maybe it's better to buy companion link ...

or a different brand of smartphone?

Thanks NTP66

It's been so long that I switched from the standalone version to the Microsoft store version that I don't remember what bug/issue I was fixing by doing so ... I'll be d/l the standalone version now just as a "plan B" ;-)

I have also discovered that It appears applications downloaded from the MS store are saved here:

C:/Program Files/WindowsApps

(you will need to change security permissions to view the files).

I have these two folders on my machine which I'm going to save for b/u ...

Even though at this moment I don't know what to do with them to kick off an install on a new laptop or reinstall if needed ;-/

brave soul - 15.1 the day it is released!

I'll wait to see what Gordon Kelly has to say on Forbes.com's usual "Should You Upgrade" that comes out with each iOS release.

that being said, I appreciate your leap forward and report back to us. maybe Apple will abandon their original plan to deprecate Sync to Outlook.

speaking of --- how did we get here, again? was there a warning - I need to re-read this thread from when it was posted. I don't recall any warnings in any upgrades of iTunes, since.

I think that is what most people are currently doing. And asking some brave souls who tried to do the upgrade to see what happens. I think the problem will happen if you ever want to update the iOS on your phone. Either due to you wanting to, or if you have problem and Apple insists on it if they want to help you. Or if you upgrade your computer, or the HD crashes and you want to reinstall iTunes.

I have looked online for the latest standalone version and the only one I can come up with is relatively old. Which I would then upgrade to the latest. I do not know where to get either 12.11.3.17 or 12.12.1.1 as a standalone in the event I need to reinstall my OS on my computer.

BUT - I am seeing some oddities with Outlook categories I have selected on my Calendar events.
I have a dark-blue shade for both Business items and NCAAF games. Now, my events that were only labeled as NCAAF have both that and Business categories checked on. Not sure if iTunes is doing this or my new move to Outlook 2019 from Outlook 2010.

I noticed category issues as well when I upgraded from Office 2010 to 2019 last year. I think MS must have made changes that affect this, not Apple.

Around 3 weeks ago I walked into an Apple Store,

and talked to a standing staff there on this issue.

He had no idea what I was talking about.

I then showed him pages related to this topic:

"Support for syncing contacts and calendars has been deprecated and will be removed in a future version of iTunes."

He glanced through the pages info using his own ipad, and then he told me he had not heard of this issue,

and he was not able to help further.

Yes, it still syncs without a problem. I think so long as you do not upgrade iTunes you will be ok. At one point an update to iTunes will be needed to upgrade the phone to the latest OS. What OS build will that be? perhaps 15.4 I don't know. Could be it will only be an issue with iOS16 when it comes out. No way to know.

I really hope they reverse on this. I do not want my data to be stored in the cloud. Then it is out of my hands. Out of my control.

On another note, while the answer is likely to be "it works fine," but has anyone upgraded to 15.4 and tested the sync?
