Catalina 10.15.7 and Safari 14.1 Updates

I updated to Catalina 10.15.7 and Safari 14.1on my 2020 iMac last night and have a problem similar to some others.

Ebay webpages will not load properly. They load and show up for about a second, then the page turns blank and reloads for another second, then goes blank with an error message:

A problem repeatedly occurred with "https://www.ebay.com/....."

I have shut down and restarted but there is no improvement. If anyone has a solution please let me/us know.

Thank you.

Most of the apps that will not work with Big Sur would also not be able to work with Catalina. This is because Apple made 32-bit apps no longer compatible with Catalina and above. You can find more information here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208436

If you want to test Big Sur first, you can downgrade back to Catalina if it does not work for you. You can follow downgrade instructions to older macOS systems through this link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683

I am having a similar issue as well. This happens on Safari 14.1. There are a few websites that just won't load up. The message that I'd get is "A problem repeatedly occurred with '[html address]' - Reload Page".

I don't want to reinstall Catalina (I'm on 10.15.7) just to fix it. I am hoping the next Safari update will fix it.

In the meantime, I downloaded Safari Technology Preview to use (I prefer not to use Chrome). https://developer.apple.com/safari/technology-preview/

So far, I don't have any issue loading any websites using the Safari Technology Preview.

I hope this helps anyone who doesn't feel like reinstalling Catalina to fix a Safari issue.

The original Safari 14.1 update for Catalina and Mojave, which was released on Apr 26th, was buggy, and Apple pulled it within a couple of days. A corrected Safari 14.1 update for Catalina and Mojave, which quashes the bugs from the original version, was released on May 4th.

I posted some more details on this subject in another ASC thread yesterday; you can find that post here. For ease of reference, I'll quote it below:

On Catalina (v10.15.7)…
  •  the build version of Safari 14.0.3 (before the 14.1 update) was 15610.4.3.1.7
  •  the build version of Safari 14.1 (buggy update, released Apr 26th) was 15611.1.21.161.5
  •  the build version of Safari 14.1 (corrected update, released May 4th) is 15611.1.21.161.7

On Mojave, the build numbers for Safari 14.1 are the same as above, except that they begin with 14 rather than 15.

Detailed info about the security content of each of the two Safari 14.1 updates are available at the following links:
  •  Safari 14.1 (buggy update, released Apr 26th)… <https://support.apple.com/kb/HT212318>
  •  Safari 14.1 (corrected update, released May 4th)… <https://support.apple.com/kb/HT212340>

Note that the description of the latter says that it "includes the security content of" the former.

More info about this issue is available in the content and comments of the post "Apple has pulled Safari 14.1 update for Mojave and Catalina" at Howard Oakley's wonderful Mac tech blog, The Eclectic Light Company.

I just learned today that eBay won't work in addition to a few Bank webpages. I'm hoping those sites are simply vetting the upgrade and n time will allow the pages to load, that or Apple fixes this friggin bug. Not everyone wants to upgrade their vintage OS as there have been issues, Catalina tried to kill my Mac.

These are the web pages, along with all of the pages associated with the domain, that I have found so far having the problem:

https://www.ebay.com

https://www.cnn.com

https://www.retailmenot.com

https://www.couponcabin.com

https://www.mac-forums.com

https://www.rxlist.com/script/main/hp.asp a

Macupdate.com sometimes has the problem. Even the same webpage can have variable results.

https://www.macupdate.com/

My solution so far has been to make Chrome my default browser.

This is NOT a helpful answer and I can't believe it was marked BY APPLE as such! I have a similar problem. I go into a web page with Safari and everything loads fine, for instance, Facebook. Then, I click and go to a new FBook page. All of a sudden, NOTHING I click does anything. I HAVE to reload the page and then, it's a 50/50 chance of it actually working. What happened to Apple? Is there an update or fix?

I'm not sure what happened with that. I wasn't exactly addressing the Safari issue. Instead, I was explaining to someone that if they were hesitant to try Big Sur, which might have addressed the bugs, because some apps are not supported, they could downgrade to an older version of macOS. Since you are experiencing the Safari bugs, what version of macOS are you running? I would suggest you also look at the post by jdmcmurtry above your post.
