Paint chipping on my IPhone 12 (Blue)

Hi, i purchased my IPhone 12 about 5 months back, i started noticing paint chipping off near my camera lens and it bothered me alot cause its a costly phone and this shouldn't happen. At first it was just a dot now it's worse and i don't know how or who to contact to get this fixed. We pay a hefty huge amount for these phone's and this shouldn't happen! Apple should be ashamed of such low quality paint job.Does anyone else have this problem with their new IPhone?

iPhone 12, iOS 14

Same thing happening with me. My phone is around 4 months old. I take very good care of my phone. It’s not a physical damage from my part.

I got it examined from the local authorised service centre as unfortunately in India there’s no way to get direct service from Apple. They refused to do anything saying that they do not have any way to confirm whether the damage has been done physically by me or if it’s a manufacturing defect. Also they said that Apple did not pass on any information or knowledge about this issue to them so they cannot do anything.

I have been an iPhone user for a decade now. This is the first time this is happening and it’s getting worse over time.

P.S. Funny how some people in these forums jump to conclusion based on their assumption that it’s the fault of the user.

Apple might have noticed this issue by now but refuse to take any actions because if they started replacing phones with paint chipping it ll be difficult to identify which is from the defect and from normal wear and tear and people will obviously take advantage of it by replacing phones with paint chips which isn’t due to the defect causing a huge loss for the company. It sucks but there isn’t anything we can do about it.Only options are to cover up the areas(lens protectors) and ignore it or selling the phone and getting another one hoping it wont happen again. Also if are into DIY and crafty maybe try to repaint small areas like the camera lens with aluminium paints which matches the color and hope it works.

If it's happening on the ring it ll surely on the sides. It started with the ring and I expected it to stop there and put on a lens protector from spigen to cover it. But then the sides started peeling. There is nothing we can do except cover it up.Or maybe sell it before the 13 is out because the 12 got a price drop of 100usd.If you can live with this and pretend not to care then fine.

I tried everywhere(Customer support, Service centre) but didn’t got any resolution. They just said that it was cosmetic damage and it doesn’t come under warranty. So, after paying such a premium price for a phone and to have the paint just chip off on its own just after 2 months of purchasing it is really disappointing and at the same time depressing too. My cheaper android phone which is 3 years old already has its paint intact because they haven’t done cheap paint work like apple.

i have been using 12 Blue from past one year and i have took this issue to apple care they say that it is cosmetic issue and doest not cover in warrant scheme. Its very disappointing for me i have been apple customer from decade but never faced such experience with apple service. Now apple sales are increasing so they are neglecting customers. They should recall all iphone 12 batch phones and give new replacement. We are paying for their mistakes and behaving like innocents.

I imagine that they resort to this cheap paint to cut costs of course, however I do wish that the paint shared the same quality that proves such as the iPhone 11 and older had. I have an iPhone 12 mini and I have the same issue. While it doesn’t bother me that much because I have a case (and I’ll probably just go and buy a new phone just because) I think it is certain an issue that needs to be addressed soon.

It is happening with me as well. I have been noticing it for a very long time, and I have been caucious from the very first time I noticed it. But this seems be poor quality paint, and the upper camera lens paint is also chipping off now. I really need this phone to be replaced, I talked to the service center for hours, and they adviced me to talk to the customer care, and they will help me with this, and the service person herself accept that this is the paint that is chipping off. I really need to be replace or I need my money back. I didn't know that this phone will turn out to be a big mess for me, I paid for a premium product, NOT with this kind of poor manufactural defect.

Same with my iPhone 12 and I even contacted apple support and visited the service centre but no help. Apple was known for its best service and after sales but now they are behaving same like other cheap brands. You pay heavy amount to buy these phones and then because of their poor manufacturing quality the paint is chipping from camera ring, Apple this is just not acceptable, I used to be an Apple fan but now Apple is degrading its brand image.

This issue happened to me where my first iPhone was iPhone 8 plus. Sold off after 1 year usage. Have been using Samsung, Huawei and XiaoMi, but paint chipping does not happen to any of my Android phones. So just sharing my experience here, I wont deny the iOS is better than Android. However, Apple is doing good at things which are internal but they are bad on external. If you are concern about the external, Android might suit you.
