checking "(null)"... and stuck

I try to upgrade my MacBook OS from High Sierra (10.13.6) to either Catalina or Big Sur but after agreeing the software license agreement I get a pop-up message saying Checking "(null)"... and nothing happens. At both of the OS upgrades.

Any idea how to get this tackled without coding?

thx

The installers are placed in the Applications folder, and the recent installers are all named Install macOS {version}.

Some users do relocate the installers elsewhere, and the bootable installers are inherently located elsewhere, though that location does not matter for the installation or upgrade.

It would appear that the installer download was corrupted, or incomplete.

Common culprits for weird problems are add-on anti-malware and anti-virus apps, add-on cleaner apps, and add-on VPN client apps.

Look around for an existing installer around, and then re-download the installer. Finder allows searches for filenames containing strings, and enter Install in the search box and select name from the drop-down. (I've had a few cases here were some old get was sitting on an external storage device somewhere, and download was stale or busted or otherwise, but the Mac App Store still found it.) Failing the above... Boot into Safe Mode, and try the same sequence again. You may or will need to download the installer again. Safe Mode info > How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

You will want to use Safari (just) for accessing the kit download, if (when) you re-download it.

How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

Firstly - is this computer a Qualifying for Catalina. If it is not listed on the link provided then it can not go higher than Mojave. And, if it does not qualify for Catalina - for sure it will not qualify for Big Sur.

As for space - check in Applications folder and look for two applications. Once called " Install Catalina " and other"Install Big Sur ". Drag and Drop both to Trash, empty Trash and restart computer

Yes, it is listed here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211238 so it´s qualified for Big Sur and with the above described steps I have managed to upgrade to Big Sur so this part is OK.

But in Applications I don´t see any of them - actually there is no "Install ..." app at all. It must be hidden somewhere where I´ve got no access? (sorry for the stupid questions, this is my first mac after 20+ years of windows)

Thanks for the good tool.

I was hoping to find out whether this ca. 10 GB is the residual of the Catalina and Mojave install attempt but it seems not. And when I add the numbers from OmniDiskSweeper and System Information, they don't match.

But I give up here :) I can live with the rest of the free space and I´ll understand it somewhere in the future - or not.
