Go to Finder Menu, Preferences, Sidebar and check everything that is unchecked.
The default is to have everything checked, they must have been unchecked in the past.

Connect your phone with the cable. Make sure the side bar in Finder is enabled (View menu, Show Sidebar). You should then see Locations in the sidebar, and it should list your Macintosh HD, your computer by its name, any external drives, and your iPhone.

To sync your device to your Mac, you need to use iTunes, not finder.
Not true. If you have Mac OS Catalina (Mac OS 10.15) or Big Sur (Mac OS 11) you use Finder. There is no iTunes anymore on Mac OS versions from Catalina on. Instead iTunes has been replaced by Music, Podcasts, and TV, 3 separate apps.
What is right above Tags? This is what you should see, and you can click on any of them to expand them:
Here it shows Expanded (below Favorites)
Dont Panic is my iPhone

Show Sidebar is activated . In the list is Recent, Applications, Downloads, Movies, my name, then iCloud with iCloud Drive, Deskto, Documents & then Tags. Non of the other items are there?
