iPadOS 14.5 Audio Skipping and Glitching

Hi! Just putting this out here.

Ever since I updated to the new iPadOS 14.5 and 14.5.1, I’ve been having some stupid audio issue that never occurred before. I constantly have to unplug the earbuds to fix the reoccurring issue. Basically if audio plays and the bug happens, the audio is fine, but would skip or glitch out. It’s still audible, just with annoying glitches and cuts. It can happen in any app.

This is not my earbuds but rather the update. My audio has been working PERFECTLY fine until yesterday, when I updated to iOS 14.5. Also, this is an iPad Air 4. I’ve tried everythinf (from restarting and many other things) and it’s still there. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug in a future update. I work on videos and things that use audio. The timing will be messed up because of the bug.

Anyone else who is experiencing this or any suggestions? I would appreciate it! Thanks :D

Hi - I am having the same exact issue. I have tried 2 Apple USB C to 3.5mm dongles and tried 3 different pairs of headphones (including one with an in-line mic). It seems multi-tasking with any apps that have audio/video triggers this audio skipping issue for me and then won't stop skipping until I unplug/reinsert headphones or restart the iPad. Once this issue starts, all apps are impacted (YouTube, Apple Music, Safari, etc).

I bought my iPad less then 1 week ago and the audio was fine the first few days and then the same audio issue started happening. Updated to 14.5.1 last night hoping it would fix the audio problem but still persists. I am under AppleCare and contacted Apple yesterday, they told me to go to Best Buy (where I purchased it) and meet with their Apple authorized technician. The technician could not figure it out either but said they were seeing other people with this issue. The technician did a Reset All Settings but as he suspected it's an OS issue, he couldn't do much else. I ended up exchanging the iPad for a new one and currently waiting for everything to re-download. I'll try and give you an update tomorrow.

This problem of Glitching audio appeared when I to update 14.6, use a USB-C wired Apple earplug. New iPad 4 Air.

Is a IOS bug. Do not look further for cable problems. Do not see any workarounds. Restart etc. but problem will reappear.

I cannot use YouTube or trainings materials. I need now to use Windows again.

Not happy, just spent money on two a ipad4 air’s which are now useless.

Any one with a workaround?

Just thinking aloud… This thread has been viewed 282 times as far as I can tell which is a small percentage of the tens of millions of iPads sold, so why should Apple be bothered?. It could be a faulty batch of dongles, but then why is it only happening after ios 14.6? It must be the OS!

something doesn’t add up

I’ve tried two external DACs now, one usb and one Bluetooth and they both work fine and with better sound quality than the dongle.

This is really disappointing.

Apple is being ever so quiet about it and haven’t even done anything. Only evidence we have that they did something is how in the (15), the issue doesn’t occur, at least from what I’ve seen in this forum.

They would rather be quiet about the most simple, but very problematic bug but work on the new 15 update that barely has much changes compared to the 14. It’s basically the iOS/iPadOS 14, but upgraded a bit.

Yep .. I’m having the same problem .. unplugging works but is not really a solution .. just a temporary fix .. I’m also having a similar issue when recording into GarageBand via a usb audio interface .. recording starts glitching part way through .. unplug everything and do a hard reset and it works ok .. until next time and then it starts again .. this on a 2020 iPad Pro 11” and started after the update to 14.5 .. had anyone tried using an external usb dac? .. would that fix the problem? ..

Well my iPad Air 4 is still glitching... and was working fine up until iOS14.6. 14.7 did not fix the problem - Ughh!!! Running straight out USB-C to USB-3 into Ecamm Live app,,,, a buzz every 20-30 seconds occurring.... NOTE: my iPad Pro (2 years old) works fine w Ecamm Live and iOS14.7. I have changed cables, and performed a clean install... problem remains...

I am also having this problem with my brand new iPad Pro 12.9 M1. It’s a little frustrating as one of the reasons for purchasing this iPad was to experiment more with music production on a high-end iPad. When it starts happening I can also unplug my adapter and plug it back in the temporary solve the problem. Before I bought the adapter, I thought I noticed some odd audio artifacts over Bluetooth when I had several audio centric programs opened at the same time. I don’t know if that’s related or not. I don’t think I have noticed the very strong and obvious digital glitching over Bluetooth audio however (Apple AirPods) or from the speakers. That doesn’t help however as music production using Bluetooth for audio is not really an option due to the lag time. I hope this gets resolved soon. I am tempted to hook up one of my more pro audio interfaces and see if it happens with them. I am wondering if this tiny DAC built into this adaptor is just not all it’s cracked up to be. If I can’t use this as a mobile music workstation with headphones, 50% of the reason I purchased it just went out the window.

I have encountered video blue screen lock-up. My iPad Air (3rd gen) becomes totally nonresponsive. It will not recognize a request to reboot. It just skips between the blue screen and a black screen. This has just commenced with iPadOS 14.7.1. But it happens with every podcast I play in YouTube with every pair of earbuds I own: Apple AirPods Pro, JBL Free, Klipsch T5 Sport, Raycon E25 Pro Earbuds. Clearly the indictment is on the update. I have a Premium YouTube membership. My version is 16.35.3. No other combo has yet to cause the symptom. If I set the iPad down and give it a few minutes, it will eventually either reboot or at least take me to a restart screen.

This was happening for me (2020 iPad Pro and USB-C headphone adaptor) but seemed to have been fixed with iOS 14.7.1.

Unfortunately it’s returned with iOS 15, albeit not so badly. Previously I was getting frequent glitches and stuttering but not it’s just the occasional brief glitch.

I do hope that the next 15 update will do the trick.

Since iOS update 14.5 my usb-c adapter to 3.5mm headphone jack doesn’t work anymore. Ive got the original apple adapter and apple earphones 3.5mm. They were working fine before the update and for the past 4-5 months since the update they dont work anymore. With every new iOS update I get my hopes up only to be disappointed. Not even 14.7 or 15 did anything for me.

In my case, it’s not audio glitches but they just stopped working at all. They work fine on my iPhone. Its just my iPad that doesn’t connect to wired headphones anymore. How much longer do I need to wait for a solution? Ridiculous.
