iPadOS 14.5 Audio Skipping and Glitching

Hi! Just putting this out here.

Ever since I updated to the new iPadOS 14.5 and 14.5.1, I’ve been having some stupid audio issue that never occurred before. I constantly have to unplug the earbuds to fix the reoccurring issue. Basically if audio plays and the bug happens, the audio is fine, but would skip or glitch out. It’s still audible, just with annoying glitches and cuts. It can happen in any app.

This is not my earbuds but rather the update. My audio has been working PERFECTLY fine until yesterday, when I updated to iOS 14.5. Also, this is an iPad Air 4. I’ve tried everythinf (from restarting and many other things) and it’s still there. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug in a future update. I work on videos and things that use audio. The timing will be messed up because of the bug.

Anyone else who is experiencing this or any suggestions? I would appreciate it! Thanks :D

Hi - I am having the same exact issue. I have tried 2 Apple USB C to 3.5mm dongles and tried 3 different pairs of headphones (including one with an in-line mic). It seems multi-tasking with any apps that have audio/video triggers this audio skipping issue for me and then won't stop skipping until I unplug/reinsert headphones or restart the iPad. Once this issue starts, all apps are impacted (YouTube, Apple Music, Safari, etc).

I bought my iPad less then 1 week ago and the audio was fine the first few days and then the same audio issue started happening. Updated to 14.5.1 last night hoping it would fix the audio problem but still persists. I am under AppleCare and contacted Apple yesterday, they told me to go to Best Buy (where I purchased it) and meet with their Apple authorized technician. The technician could not figure it out either but said they were seeing other people with this issue. The technician did a Reset All Settings but as he suspected it's an OS issue, he couldn't do much else. I ended up exchanging the iPad for a new one and currently waiting for everything to re-download. I'll try and give you an update tomorrow.

Same here as well. We're developing an audio app and as you can imagine this issue is causing nightmares. As techtonic specifies it's occurring more evidently with an external interface via usb, temp fix is to unplug/replug it, and then after a few minutes it's back. This is a huge risk for a professional audio application and renders it non usable. we've tried changing sample rates and buffer sizes and still no luck. I've testing on an ipad using ios 14.0.1 and no issue. Only on the one using ios 14.6. The sound itself starts with a small amount of clicking, then goes into a super trashy sound, but it sounds like the original sound is still there, only making a duplicate of the original with the trash sound that is slightly delayed. You can hear the latency when you pause the audio and the trashy sound is slightly behind. We really hope this is looked into as other audio apps seem to be suffering from the same.

Well my iPad Air 4 is still glitching... and was working fine up until iOS14.6. 14.7 did not fix the problem - Ughh!!! Running straight out USB-C to USB-3 into Ecamm Live app,,,, a buzz every 20-30 seconds occurring.... NOTE: my iPad Pro (2 years old) works fine w Ecamm Live and iOS14.7. I have changed cables, and performed a clean install... problem remains...

Hi again. Last night it worked perfectly fine for a couple of hours, today there is no sound from the audio adapter, neither of them. I am on iPad Pro 11” M1 and I think this that is totally unacceptable for the price range of the pro.

So I just sit here and w8 for another update? Or I go buying again other adapters that may work?

Dear, Apple company, these kind of issues souldnt even exist. What is going on? I understand that this may be a very strange issue to even fix it but can we get some attention?

I am also having this problem with my brand new iPad Pro 12.9 M1. It’s a little frustrating as one of the reasons for purchasing this iPad was to experiment more with music production on a high-end iPad. When it starts happening I can also unplug my adapter and plug it back in the temporary solve the problem. Before I bought the adapter, I thought I noticed some odd audio artifacts over Bluetooth when I had several audio centric programs opened at the same time. I don’t know if that’s related or not. I don’t think I have noticed the very strong and obvious digital glitching over Bluetooth audio however (Apple AirPods) or from the speakers. That doesn’t help however as music production using Bluetooth for audio is not really an option due to the lag time. I hope this gets resolved soon. I am tempted to hook up one of my more pro audio interfaces and see if it happens with them. I am wondering if this tiny DAC built into this adaptor is just not all it’s cracked up to be. If I can’t use this as a mobile music workstation with headphones, 50% of the reason I purchased it just went out the window.

NO - has NOT been resolved for my setup. iPad Air 4th Gen - USB-C direct out to USC3 input. Ecamm live App seeing iPad as Video/Audio "source". "Glitch on audio at semi-random intervals of 15 - 40 seconds continuously. MacPro 2013. This did not start happening until 14.5 iOS. Ecamm Live Tech team has been able to duplicate the issue and verified this to be an Apple iOS "bug".

I am sorry to hear that others are still having an issue with this, hopefully it is in the process of getting resolved for various configurations. I can report that for the last several days (nearly a week) since updating to 14.7.1 I have had no noticeable issues on my 2021 iPad Pro, and it was pretty terrible before. Perhaps the fix still needs some refinement, but at least for me, audio is working again.

Same with my set up - still glitching no matter what iOS I use after 14.5. iPad Air 4 USB-C out to Mac Pro 2013 USB-3 input. Ecamm live application for live streaming used. iPad Air is seen as virtual USB source in Ecamm Live but the audio glitches every 20-40 seconds. Unusable! The software developers at Ecamm live were able to duplicate the problem on another iPad Pro and stated this is an Apple software issue.

Agree - only when direct routing from USB-C to computer does the audio glitch manifest. I have found a workaround by using a USB-C hub which has audio and HDMI out... This allows me to get "no glitch" audio from the iPad Air-4 USB-C output through the hub. This was an expensive workaround... really wish Apple would fix this... has been going on now for more than six months! - since iOS14.6.

This must be a more complex driver issue, I think, since I posted on this thread probably 6-8 weeks ago with the issue, and luckily for me the iPadOS update 14.7 resolved the issue for me entirely. I can use the USB-C connection for audio now without issue…at least for a “basic” scenario where I am plugging in earphones…I am not using a more complex audio setup or integrating with other apps (eg music apps).

I really hope Apple resolves the issue for all remaining scenarios…hopefully with 14.7.2 and onwards?
