Hello,
It has been some time since I posted about this issue but I have been following the discussion here. I had done all the resets, reinstalling, etc... that others had done; I refused to take the iPad back to an Apple Store because it was clearly a software bug. The last interaction I had with Apple Support, I installed debug profiles on my mother-in-law's 8th Gen iPad (which has this issue) and another iPad Air 4 (which didn't exhibit this problem and we know why now) made several FaceTime calls between them and sent a ton of data to Apple from that session over a month ago. No issue had been identified last I heard. When I read the post today from Kiruzol I was skeptical at first, however, I experimented with the 8th Gen iPad cover tonight and, sure enough, this is the case. As long as I had the cover so that it isn't folded over behind the iPad, so the magnet in the cover is not touching the iPad in any way, calls work fine. If I have the cover, which is attached to the case, folded behind the iPad flat calls fail right away. If I am in a FaceTime call and fold the cover over, the call drops.
The interesting thing is that this cover is not from Apple, it has a plastic case that fits over the body of the iPad and a 3 piece folding cover that goes over the screen similar to an Apple smart cover, and this problem is reproducible every time with it. My wife's iPad Air 4 (which I know some have had this issue with) has an Apple smart cover, is at the same iPadOS level and has never had this problem (no matter what position we put the cover in). All I can figure is that Apple made a software change in iPadOS 14.5 that changed the sensitivity of the magnetic sensor in the iPad screen, the Apple smart covers (which I am sure were tested) must fall in the acceptable range but 3rd party covers do not, bizarre. I looked at the list of updates in 14.5 and nothing stood out as being the cause.
Thanks for the post Kiruzol, it was very helpful. Off to get my mother-in-law a new case and give her iPad back to her.

For much newer, larger screen iPad models, without a Home button, try the new hard reset procedure for the new 2018/2020 iPad Pro and iPad Air 4 models.
1. Press and Release the Volume Up button.
2. Then immediately Press and Release the Volume Down button.
3. Then, Press and Hold the Power Button at the top. You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the Power Button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.
Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018 iPad Pro will boot up completely to the iPad Pro’s Lock screen.
Best of Luck to You!
OK…may have found the source of my issue….after everything I’ve been through and all the testing, logs, replacing iPad and iPhone, restoring with backups, new I’d, restoring with MacBook and frustrations beyond frustrations…the Apple support guy, Patrick, had me remove the protective case that has the screen cover attached to it…everything worked fine…FaceTime, Messenger Video, Phone calls….put the case back on with the cover flipped on the backside…calls failed…hmmmm…..
took it off again…everything works like it should….really?!?!?! Could that have been my issue all along?!?!?!
I’ll post results after a couple days testing…apparently, the magnet on the cover was causing the issues…
Hi everyone,
I have been having the exact same issue with FaceTime and other video chatting apps like discord and zoom. I have been contacting apple support for the past few days and tried various methods but nothing worked. Today I went into the Apple Store and explained everything that was going on and what I have tried and they said it is most likely a software issue since a week ago, another person came in with the same issue, they replaced his iPad Air 4 for him, and when he activated it, the FaceTime issue still persisted. FaceTime may work on iPhones and MacBooks but not the iPad currently because each type of device has their own software (iPadOS, iOS, macOS), so it is definitely a bug with iPadOS. They said to look out for the next one or two updates and see if those fixes the problem since their latest updates were not directed at fixing this issue. They said that apple has become aware of this issue and are trying to fix it. The lady I spoke with told me that she has reported it to try and move this issue up to tier 2 and gets to the engineer team. She said if you have the same issue, call into apple support and report it because if more people report it, the quicker it will be solved.
But my case doesn’t have a magnet 🤪 oops I found a discreet magnet and it works
After updating to iOS 15 facetime and all other applications using audio/mic are working fine again.
Interesting finding.
Go to “Date & Time”. Turn off “Set Automatically” and change the time to a different location/time.
Then “Set Automatically” back On again.
FaceTime started to work again for a while. This worked for me twice.
I removed my case this morning and had a successful FaceTime call lasting ten minutes. Never got more than a minute or so into a call, if that, with my cover on. Not sure it’s a panacea, but worth trying
Worked for me as well. I just called apple and they asked to see this thread.. Amazing it was all caused my a magnet on a case
After updating to iOS 15, facetime (and all other applications using audio/mic that were struggling when the cases magnet was too close) are working fine again on my 8th Gen iPad.
Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, empress52.
If we understand your post correctly, you're not able to use FaceTime on your iPad Pro but your Wi-Fi network is working normally. We’d like to help.
Checking your Wi-Fi network was a great place to start. We'd recommend following the other steps in this article:
If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
I have tried every suggestion listed here numerous times, all with the help of Apple specialists…furthermore, I received a new IPad Pro 12.9 2020 and the issue continued. Replaced the SIM card in the iPad and the issue still continues. Restored my iPhone, thinking somehow it might be the problem, but the problem persisted. I have even been sent a new phone and restored it and the problem is still present…
The only thing that seems to have any success in fixing this problem is to reset the network settings on both iPad and iPhone, but this is only temporary, as the FaceTime problem returns within the first few minutes to as long as an hour…
Now, having eliminated all hardware from being the issue by replacing suspect devices with new ones, they have determined that the issue must be a software glitch and my issue has been forwarded to the engineers for resolution…still waiting…
Hi guys,
I have the same issue with my iPad (any program with video or audio call is not working like facetime FB messenger MS Teams etc)
I had first the iPad 2020 and I did everything possible to solve the problem like:
Nothing helped me and my iPad is literally useless.
The apple support employee told me that they are working on it, but she cannot give me a deadline when this problem will be solved. The problem could be solved with the new software iPados 15 but they cannot promise.
So My advice is:
Go to the apple store or wherever you bought your iPad and return your iPad, get your money back and that is it.
They have to give you your money because they cannot solve the problem.
I did the same :)
Holy Cow! I just took off my case done tried this and it worked! My case does not have a magnet, but it is a third party case from Amazon. Was your an Apple product?
