Hello,

It has been some time since I posted about this issue but I have been following the discussion here. I had done all the resets, reinstalling, etc... that others had done; I refused to take the iPad back to an Apple Store because it was clearly a software bug. The last interaction I had with Apple Support, I installed debug profiles on my mother-in-law's 8th Gen iPad (which has this issue) and another iPad Air 4 (which didn't exhibit this problem and we know why now) made several FaceTime calls between them and sent a ton of data to Apple from that session over a month ago. No issue had been identified last I heard. When I read the post today from Kiruzol I was skeptical at first, however, I experimented with the 8th Gen iPad cover tonight and, sure enough, this is the case. As long as I had the cover so that it isn't folded over behind the iPad, so the magnet in the cover is not touching the iPad in any way, calls work fine. If I have the cover, which is attached to the case, folded behind the iPad flat calls fail right away. If I am in a FaceTime call and fold the cover over, the call drops.

The interesting thing is that this cover is not from Apple, it has a plastic case that fits over the body of the iPad and a 3 piece folding cover that goes over the screen similar to an Apple smart cover, and this problem is reproducible every time with it. My wife's iPad Air 4 (which I know some have had this issue with) has an Apple smart cover, is at the same iPadOS level and has never had this problem (no matter what position we put the cover in). All I can figure is that Apple made a software change in iPadOS 14.5 that changed the sensitivity of the magnetic sensor in the iPad screen, the Apple smart covers (which I am sure were tested) must fall in the acceptable range but 3rd party covers do not, bizarre. I looked at the list of updates in 14.5 and nothing stood out as being the cause.

Thanks for the post Kiruzol, it was very helpful. Off to get my mother-in-law a new case and give her iPad back to her.

To those who are interested, my issue is not limited to FaceTime… I am also unable to answer my phone using my iPad nor can I make calls. I cannot use Facebook Messenger Video (it either fails or has no audio) nor can I make Zoom calls for the same reason.

I recently updated to iPadOS 14.7 and everything worked as it should for a short time, then completely failed as before.

Apple Support has had me restore using my backup, restore using my MacBook and thinking that it could be a corruption somewhere in my Apple ID, we even created a new ID that also had the same issues.

I have also swapped my wireless modem out for a new one, yet the issues persist.

Apple has also provided me with a replacement iPad Pro, which also suffered from the same issue. Verizon even replaced my iPhone and SIM cards and the issue continues.

I’ve downloaded a file from Apple to record performance, provided screenshots, call logs and every other piece of information requested by support, yet the issue has not been resolved. My case has been in the hands of the “Engineers” for well over a month and other than several inquiries made by me as to the status of my case, there has been no communication by Apple.

Since this IPad worked flawlessly prior to updating to iPadOS 14.5 and began having issues immediately after, and given that every piece of hardware even remotely associated with each other has been replaced, complete restorations using different methods, the issue MUST be with Apple and changes made in the iPadOS either in 14.5 directly or a culmination of errors hidden in previous updates resulting in these issues.

I just don’t believe that Apple is devoting the necessary resources to solve this issue, because every support specialist I have spoken to (in excess of a dozen) claim that they have never heard of this problem and could find no documentation regarding the issue except resetting the network, which may or not have an affect on the issue, certainly not a fix…

I am so frustrated with Apple, as this is supposed to be their premiere product and fails to meet the specific reasons I bought it for in the first place.

Everyone here needs to send out a bunch of feedback and continue to do so on this issue until Apple finally gets the idea that there is something wrong with FaceTime and later iOS/iPadOS 14.5 and newer.

Cognizant Apple teams and employees DOES NOT monitor these user to user support communities.

Everyone here needs to send MULTIPLE feedback to Apple on this issue.

If everyone here is adamant and resolute and angry/annoyed enough about this continuing issue, then you all need to take whatever time is needed to send lots of feedback back to Apple.

This is THE ONLY REAL way to get the right Apple employees’ attention.

Tap the link below and start hammerin’ on this feedback page to get Apple's attention or this issue will continue to go unfixed and unrecognised.

Now I understand why since I have started using the Magic Keyboard last 3 weeks all is working fine. I thought that was a coincidence and Apple made something at their side.

Cannot imagine it could be the case! Before I was using a 3rd party cover with magnet.

It is the case that my daughter iPad 8 (a model that is also affected) never had this issue. In fact she uses those thick ribber kids cases.

I have upgraded to iOS 15, but haven’t checked out Facetime yet. But Maxcasal is right. I also tried that suggestion. I have an iPad Pro 11” 2020, and a friend has an iPad Pro 11” 2021. We both have cases that have a magnet in it because we use wake/sleep with our iPads. One of us usually gets a “poor connection” message and we can still speak with one another but the video never resumes.

We removed our cases, and now our Facetime calls continue without a problem!

I will attempt a Facetime call with the new operating system and see if this has been corrected.

My mother in law's 8th gen iPad has been having the same problem for well over a month now, since upgrading to iOS 14.5. Upgraded to 14.6 and the problem persisted. I did everything that is recommended in various discussion groups plus what Apple support recommended when I spoke them, a recovery install. FaceTime worked 2 or 3 times after the recovery install then stopped again. I still believe that this is a software bug which is specific to the A12 chip, based on the devices that people are reporting the issue on. Please let us know how you make out with the senior engineer, I will be contacting Apple support again about the issue as well.

I've been working through the same FaceTime issue with Apple Support on my mother in law's 8th Gen iPad. I have downloaded profiles, reproduced the problem and sent logs to Apple. I doubt it is anything to do with your Apple ID, when FaceTime calls are failing to her 8th Gen iPad I can still call her on her iMac and the 6th Gen iPad (that we lent to her). I've done all the things that Apple requested; recovery reinstalls, fresh installation with no recovery, tried the iPad on different networks, etc... problem persists. There is most likely a software bug here that seems to impact only certain Apple silicon (A12 and maybe now M1iPads). BTW, her 8th Gen iPad was working fine for 6 months until she upgraded to 14.5 in June, after that this problem has persisted (including an upgrade to 14.6).

Oops! My case does have a magnet. Just looked up the specs on Amazon, and although not visible, there is a magnet to detect when the case is opened and the screen is activated, just like the Apple branded case. So, I experimented some more. If I flip my cover to the back of the iPad, it fails. If I open it and lay it flat, so the cover of the case lies in the same plane as the screen, it works! If I tripod it so I can sit it in a table, it also works. Something is very, very strange as it still should be on the Apple techs to fix it.

Yes, I have the same problem with my 11” M1 iPad Pro. I have tried all the recommended fixes to no avail. I also had the same issue with my old iPad. I think it started when I updated to 14.5 back in April.

Now, my FaceTime calls are regularly dropped without warning. I have also noticed that the call will almost invariably drop as I answer. It is extremely annoying. Interestingly, my iPhone does not suffer from the same issue; it works just fine.

Just found this post. I have exactly the same issues with a still in warranty IPad Air. Chatted with a rep a week again and tried several things including reset of my network, toggling FaceTime on/off, reboots, hard restart, etc. After network reset and reboots, it works for a few minutes, then all calls “fail” again! Rep suggested we sign off and I try a full reset back to Factory settings, use it like a new machine (not restore from backup) and if that worked then restore from backup. Nope! FaceTime calls failed immediately. So, today, I called support, explained what I had tried and the rep said I had tried everything she would recommend, so my next step was an Apple Store appointment. Interesting that she did try search Apple support records to determine if this was a common problem and came back several minutes later and indicated there was no info. Now wondering if I’m wasting my time driving 50 miles to an Apple Store next week.

IOS 14.7. Apple please GET THIS FIXED!!

I’ve done the exact same thing and other stuff too. I feel that it’s completely useless to bring it in. I tried to bring it in and they literally told me there is nothing they can do since it’s a software issue. The lady told me to call into apple support and push this all the way up to the engineering team because they actually can’t do much in store except maybe sending it in for repair that will probably do absolutely nothing.
