Hello,

It has been some time since I posted about this issue but I have been following the discussion here. I had done all the resets, reinstalling, etc... that others had done; I refused to take the iPad back to an Apple Store because it was clearly a software bug. The last interaction I had with Apple Support, I installed debug profiles on my mother-in-law's 8th Gen iPad (which has this issue) and another iPad Air 4 (which didn't exhibit this problem and we know why now) made several FaceTime calls between them and sent a ton of data to Apple from that session over a month ago. No issue had been identified last I heard. When I read the post today from Kiruzol I was skeptical at first, however, I experimented with the 8th Gen iPad cover tonight and, sure enough, this is the case. As long as I had the cover so that it isn't folded over behind the iPad, so the magnet in the cover is not touching the iPad in any way, calls work fine. If I have the cover, which is attached to the case, folded behind the iPad flat calls fail right away. If I am in a FaceTime call and fold the cover over, the call drops.

The interesting thing is that this cover is not from Apple, it has a plastic case that fits over the body of the iPad and a 3 piece folding cover that goes over the screen similar to an Apple smart cover, and this problem is reproducible every time with it. My wife's iPad Air 4 (which I know some have had this issue with) has an Apple smart cover, is at the same iPadOS level and has never had this problem (no matter what position we put the cover in). All I can figure is that Apple made a software change in iPadOS 14.5 that changed the sensitivity of the magnetic sensor in the iPad screen, the Apple smart covers (which I am sure were tested) must fall in the acceptable range but 3rd party covers do not, bizarre. I looked at the list of updates in 14.5 and nothing stood out as being the cause.

Thanks for the post Kiruzol, it was very helpful. Off to get my mother-in-law a new case and give her iPad back to her.

Thanks for that advice. I contacted Apple Support back in April regarding this issue. I have had no less than 10 specialists assigned to me and keep getting passed from one to the next. I’ve downloaded logs, page shots, updates and a myriad of other procedures and the ”engineers” have been on it for more than a month without a solution….so what else can I do? I’ll tell you all I can do…just sit and wait for the next call back asking for even more information, logs, page shots…etc. and grow ever more frustrated by their inability to solve an issue of their very own creation…

Stumbling upon this thread has been the best thing I could do today. We’ve been experiencing this very thing with my son’s iPad. We purchased the 8th gen in March for his birthday. He likes to talk with his buddies on Messenger Kids and play Minecraft or Roblox as they chat. In early June (must be shortly after his iPad updated software) he began experiencing the failed calls. We did all the things I knew. In speaking to Apple and getting bumped to the “tier 2” technicians we performed a few factory restores to the iPad, I created a whole new user account for him, we looked at settings, we grabbed logs of the issue happening in real time etc. he’s unable to FaceTime consistently. Sometimes if the call goes through he can talk for a minute or two. This is the same for messenger kids although sometimes the video sticks but we lose sound and the others on the other end can’t hear him. Screen recording is also a problem we found out. After a short time, the microphone cuts out and you only record video, no sound. Voice memos are hit and miss too. We became convinced it was a microphone issue and in mid-July we sent the iPad to Apple. After nearly a month, we picked it up today and found they replaced the iPad entirely. We were thrilled! We came home and set it up as new (not restored from a back-up) and to my horror, it continued the antics. After much googling, I stumbled upon your experiences which ease my mind that there is simply nothing I can do or have done on this end. It’s out of my hands. We have the most recent update, 14.7 installed on it also. I will be talking to Apple support again after I give it a break for a day. I’m exhausted as this has been a 2+ month endeavor so far. My other son is in need of a new iPad too and I don’t know what we will do but I’m not giving them more money for products that don’t work. He literally uses this to play with friends daily and when he can’t do that, why bother anymore? Thankfully, he’s able to use my 4 year old iPad Pro which is working great. Very dissatisfied and disappointed that this issue hasn’t been resolved yet especially after finding many are experiencing this issue. I will update if I ever get resolution.
