mac book pro 15 Big Sur (mid 2015)

Why does the screen go black when I mirror to my smart tv? It shows on TV, but cannot access control as the Mac Book screen is black. Mac Book is still on and we shut it down and start it up again.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.3

Hi 2ourclan,

It sounds like you are experiencing some issues mirroring your Mac display. We can help with this.

To start, you can find more information about how to AirPlay from your Mac to your TV here: Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror your device’s screen

If you continue to experience issue with screen mirroring, this resource might help: If AirPlay or screen mirroring isn’t working on your device

If you're not using AirPlay for mirroring, do you have an adapter connected to your Mac directly? If so, is it an Apple branded adapter or a third-party adapter? We ask because the type of adapter being used could be contributing to the issue.

Keep us posted.

When you choose to Mirror your Mac's internal display and an external display, you Mac computes a compromise resolution that it expects will work for Both displays and uses ONE Hardware rasterizer/display-generator for BOTH displays.

Sometimes the computed resolution is not quite good enough for one or the other of the displays. Rarely (but it has happened) the compromise resolution works for neither display.

You may be able to change the resolution and get the other display to become active.Or you could uncouple the displays into "extended desktop" mode and make some adjustments. this graphic explains Extended desktop better than words can:

to toggle Mirroring, try these keyboard shortcuts:

Command-BrightnessDown, or Command- F1, or Command-fn-F1
