Photos stuck uploading to iCloud

Photos stuck uploading to iCloud.

New MacBook M1 running with Big Sur updates.

Setting up Photos to use with iCloud for the first time with 17,000 photos to upload. Initially it worked it's way steadily through them but now it's stuck with 4,500 left to go. I have plenty of storage available in iCloud.

I've tried rebooting, signing in/out of iCloud, swore at the MacBook, talked nicely to it and done a little dance but nothing will get it to progress.

Google Backup and Sync worked it's way through the library in a couple of days but it's not as integrated a solution as the iCloud route.

Anybody got a solution ?

Does Apple impose a limit on the number of uploads within a time period ?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.3

Hi Bruce,

We see your upload of your photos to iCloud is currently stalled regardless of the troubleshooting you've performed. As you'll see in the following support article, the time it takes for your photos to upload to iCloud can vary depending on how many photos you have and your internet connection: Set up and use iCloud Photos

Since posting your issue in Apple Support Communities has the number of photos uploading decreased? If so, we recommend keeping your MacBook connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into power, and allow the upload to complete on its own.

If it's still stuck with 4,500 photos left to upload, try completing the upload while connected to a different Wi-Fi connection. If you're able to do so, see if the upload completes when connected directly to your internet modem with a ethernet cable.

If the upload continues to be stuck at the same amount reach out to Apple Support next: Get Support

Take care!
