Sound settings don't work

The sound is missing, the sound settings show the error "Failed to load the Sound settings window". I tried resetting NVRAM — it didn't help. Please help me solve the problem.

System Prefs not sticking Recently upgraded to Big Sur. Some of my system preferences are not being saved. I thought it was user error but now that I've restarted a few times… General prefs, when changing the highlight color, it doesn't actually change it, and then when you go back the highlight color is back to the standard blue. Mouse prefs always revert back to whatever are the standard prefs. I can change the prefs and it will honor *most* of them (not all), but it changes back after a restart. SOME sounds are messed up. Emptying the trash and moving files I get both the Catalina sound and the Big Sur sound together. The rest seem like they are the standard Big Sur sounds. None of the following made a difference: Reset NVRAM. Reset PRAM. Started up in Safe Mode. So. Thoughts or suggestions? Please chime in. Thanks! (MBP 16" 2019, OS 11.2.3. Belongs to my employer.)

No sound until I restart More and more often since macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Supplemental Update (Install Date 4/8/20) I must restart the computer to get the sound back. Is this a common problem that needs to be fixed or is there a possible remedy? Thank you.

Help with startup sound Hello, I am trying to turn off the startup sound on my mac, but in the "Sound" tab there is no option. I'm using Catalina10.15.7. Where can I find the option?
