Why am I seeing an “IMAP server” error message every time I am at a place that has public wifi?

My iPhone has been displaying the error message "The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field. This only happens when I am in public & my phone attempts to get on a public wifi network. How do I stop this? I’ve turned off wifi & even stopped Mail notifications, but it is still happening. My phone is also set so as not to attempt to go on any available wifi or give notification if there is wifi available. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi JenYFen,

Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you see an error about the IMAP server for your Gmail account, so we'd like to see how we can help. Do you notice that you're unable to send or receive email messages when you see this alert? If so, check out the steps in this article: If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The last section of the article goes over removing and adding the account again. If it get's to that point, you can set the account up manually with these steps: Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch which will allow you to enter the settings on your own. If needed, the Mail Settings Lookup tool will help you find that information.

Reply to this message if you need more help.

Cheers.
