Samsung SSD

I just bought a Samsung 870QVO SSD on the advice of a friend. However, when I looked at the Samsung website regarding this device it showed only Windows compatibility. Will this device work with my brand new iMac 27" 2020 machine? Thanks in advance.

You will need to reformat it.

What are your plans for that external SSD?

(Time Machine backups, Clone backups, Boot Disk, etc..)

I am sad to say I haven't a clue what you mean. I do know what a backup drive is but aren't the words redundant and clone the same thing?

A clone was being suggested as a quick and easy way to duplicate your existing drive without the need to installing macOS and restoring from a backup. I know that a clone will sometimes preserve the proprietary license key activations for software like MS Office whereas Migration may not.

If the Samsung SSD is an M.2 form factor, then you will need an adapter since the Apple PCIe SSD connector is a proprietary design. Seems like the Sintech adapter is the most popular and compatible adapter.

Thanks very much for the note. I bought the Samsung unit from Amazon but foolishly discarded the box and packing so I can't return it. But your message is encouraging and it's good to learn that you are running the same OS as I have on this new iMac.

Thanks again. I will plug it in after I have a chat with my local expert.

Oh, are you a former Air Force Thunderbird pilot?

Cheers.
