MacBook Pro does not recognize an audio output

I'm trying to output audio from my 2019 MacBook pro to a usb-c cable that connects on the other end to an XLR cable, which goes to a speaker system.

When I plug in the cable, I check system preferences -> sound, and see that it will accept audio input using this cable, but does not recognize it as an audio output.

Any suggestions?

The cable is Saramonic UTC-XLR

What to Try:

A. Are these even Seen?:

How to check...

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Select: About This Mac
  3. Click: System Report... Button
  4. Click: Audio
  5. Click: USB

If not, then there is no power to them. So, replace the batteries.

B. Try Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues

  1. Boot: in to Safe Mode: [Hold Down: shift key upon boot].
  2. Log in: as same user
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Restart; your Mac
  5. Log in: as same user

See if this now works

C. Try Another User:

Create a new administrator user, and see if you get this error. If you do, then it is likely an issue of the macOS as a whole. If you do not get this issue, then is it likely an issue with the users your are using while reporting this.

D. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. uninstallations), system configurations (i.e. for Ports) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Try performing each thrice. It may take sometime, being certain you have the time to perform these resets.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that is the cable.

I did check System Preferences -> Sound -> Output. The USB-C connection wasn't recognized, and was not presented as an option - unlike Input, which showed XLR Type C as an input option.

My understanding of Audio MIDI Setup is that you have to have a system output recognized in Preferences, before that tool will pick it up... is this not correct?

Yes… in some cases… for devices, eg usb powered speakers, dac’s, headphones… computer monitors with hdmi audio out.. and in some cases you can make your own output.. pick frequency, bitrate, number of channels, word clock usage and potentually what you can play it using… /through… It does say on the Saramonic website that this cable is for mobile Android devices… the usb-c one is… sad to say it doesn’t look like there is Mac support.. for this Cable at least for usb-c audio output. Hopefully I am wrong..

you could try this app..

https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/

or soundFlower… I’d suggest giving that Audio MIDI setup thing a try.. hey, at least it’s free… if that doesn’t work, then look into the app…
