iMac won't see iPhone

I am running 10.12.6 on a 2017 iMac. When connecting my iPhone 11 on IOS 14.4.2, the iMac damands a software update in order to see the phone. I do not want to update from Sierra to the current MacOS. What is updated if I click install?

Exactly what it this update? When connecting my iPhone 12, I received a mess that "A software update is required to connect to iPhone. Would you like to download and install this update now?" My system in a Mac Pro (Mid 2010) running High Sierra Version 10.13.6 Yes, OS there are OS updates since 10.13.6 nonetheless, the question is this software update a the new OS version or just an update specifically to target the ability to recognize the iPhone 12? Thank you

I think it updates iTunes to allow newer phones to connect.
