My new MacBook Pro 13 inch 2020 base model won’t turn on automatically after unboxing. The manual and online videos say that the laptop should turn on automatically when the lid is opened. Should I return the Mac or should I try to charge the laptop.

I just ordered a new MacBook Pro 13 inch 2020 base model online from amazon. I live in India. The packaging and everything is as it should be as I watched online videos before unboxing. Everything seems legit as it should be. But when I opened the lid, the laptop did not turn on automatically as it should. Now I am worried whether I should try charging it up and if it works then carry on with it or should I initiate my return/ refund process? Please suggest if such issue if common or is this a serious issue? Thank you.

thanks for your suggestion. Meantime I have also spoken with the Apple support and they have also suggested the same. So now I will try charging the laptop for an hour before trying to start it up and if everything works fine I will observe it’s battery performance after a full charge.

I wouldn’t have worries much if it was some other laptop as they all come like this but Apple has specifically mentioned on the first page of its user manual that MacBook Pro automatically starts up when you lift the lid.

Anyways, thanks for the information. I will try charging it once and meantime also inform Amazon that such a thing has happened and I need to unwound the cable from its packaging for trying to charge the laptop. Let’s us see what happens. I will post the result for everyone’s information.

I would plug it in, you can use it as the battery charges fully...

If your Mac doesn't turn on

The MacBook Pro is a battery-CAPABLE device. It does not perform optimally when used only on battery.

Batteries are always shipped in a partially-charged state. ANY other battery-capable appliance that you buy will says explicitly in the directions, "charge overnight before using". That is the Minimum you should do before considering returning it.

As soon as I plugged in the charger, the laptop turned on. The battery must have drained. The laptop charged completely in under 2 hrs. I guess the optimised battery charging function was not present in Catalina. But soon after the full charge I updated the OS to Big Sur.

Used the laptop through the day. Everything is working fine and battery health also seems to be fine.

As a feedback to Apple I would say, they should not highlight such a feature if it may fail to work as advertised.

Anyways, I am happy now and thank you guys for guiding me. tc. Bbye.
