The External Hard Disk should be connected directly to the iMac and not through the router. If you want to connect it to the router, you can but you will need to learn how to use the router's connection. You will need support from your router company in order to do that. However if it were me, I would just connect the External Hard Disk directly to the iMac.
I suspect Time Machine is not connected directly to the iMac and you are using a network drive. A Sparsebundle error indicates a break in a network connection. Please connect the External Hard Disk directly to the iMac.
My router is connected to the time machine in another room. Should I disconnect the ethernet and connect it by USB port? Will this cause a problem with other WiFi devices? I also performed a soft reset on the TM, wouldn't that clear out the problem?
Thanks for your response...very frustrating
