SMB server and file copying

Hi, I'm having trouble copying files from my Mac to an HDD plugged to my ISP's router. The file, initially, seems to be copied but at the end its size is 1MB(!)

Now I can read and delete any file I need but no way to move them to the server.

Tried with iPhone11 and File app works great.

File sharing ON and OFF but nothing changed.

Hoping my English is understandable, I would like to thank in advance to any help...

Raffaele

lelefox,

We have a few more questions that may help us guide you:

  • Are you dragging and dropping the contents in Finder or copying them another way?
  • Are you working from an Administrator account?
  • Do you know the format of the external network drive?
  • Are you able to run First Aid in Disk Utility on the external network drive to see if you can repair any issues with that drive?

This article will help with First Aid:

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support

We look forward to learning more!

Hello, Raffaele.

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you’re attempting to transfer files from your Mac to an external storage device connected to your network. You mentioned that you’re able to make the transfer on your iPhone, but your Mac may not be copying the entire file.

Are you following the guidance outlined in this article?

Use external storage devices with Mac - Apple Support

Note that it may be a permissions issue on your Mac that is preventing the file from transferring.

Warmest Regards.

lelefox,

Perfect! Knowing that First Aid cleared with no issue is great.

Are you able to drag and drop the files one at a time instead of copying like this?

What are the size of the files you're attempting to copy? FAT32 has some limitations that may be interfering with your transfer. For example, it has a maximum file size of 4 GB.

If they're under the file size limit, you might try copying one of the files into the Users > Shared file in Finder. Then create and log into a new administrator account to see if you have success in copying it from the Shared file to the external drive. This will let us know whether the issue is on the permissions level on your Mac.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

The Shared folder in Users is the Mac's default sharing folder. You shouldn't need to edit the permissions in this folder at all, and all users on your Mac should be able to access it.

Let us know how it goes!

lelefox,

You're very kind for allowing us to work through this with you. According to this Apple Support article for updates and restores, the error codes that you're seeing generally point to a hardware issue- which could be the connection (i.e. your network) or the drive itself.

iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support

Try restarting your Mac and your network equipment (router, modem, etc.) to see if it helps. If not, reach out to support for the manufacturer of the external drive to check for macOS Big Sur compatibility. You may need a firmware update for the drive, or it may not be compatible with macOS Big Sur at all.

You can also always contact Apple Support.

Good Luck!

Hello,

I usually tap command-C then command-V or right-click and copy/paste, it's me the admin, the drive is MBR and the volumes are MS-DOS (FAT32), started SOS on volumes and drive, no errors occurred.

When the drive is connected to the mac, works great.

Now I'm trying other drive (MBR, 1 volume FAT32)...after 1 hr of copying...nada!
