iMac migration

I just bought the new iMAC and successfully transferred all my data from my old iMac but several apps won't open. I have an old version of microsoft office 2011 but it says it needs to be updated. Does that mean I need to purchase the new Office 365?

Yes. You need MS Office 2019 or newer or use LibreOffice or Apple office apps. No 32 bit app will work.
