Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities tmslade,
Thank you for contacting us regarding Apple TV. You have come to the right place and we are happy to assist in getting this resolved for you. We understand the need to have only 1 remote for your entertainment center. We would recommend following the link below to connect the the 2 devices.
"Before using your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote to control your TV or receiver, clear the path between your remote and the front of your television or receiver. Volume control normally works using the IR sensor on the front of your equipment."
If volume, power or HDMI don't automatically work, you may need to reprogram your remote.
Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control > Learn New Device > Follow the on-screen prompts. Additionally, you will want to make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled.
Control your TV or receiver with your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote
Hope this helps.
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
