I don’t know what happened but my Mac was previously running on recent software update but suddenly it stopped working then I tried recovering using internet recovery but then mountain lion started working all my work disappeared what should I do

User your Time Machine Backup that was used when running Catalina. Restart in Recovery Mode Command + r immediately at startup - attach the Time Machine Backup drive. Recovery Mode will present options and choose Restore from Backup and follow the prompts.

in addition to the other comments here, what happened is this. When we do a direct reinstall of the operating system via the Internet Recovery mode, it will reinstall the original operating system the computer came with. Apparently, that is what you encountered.
