Macbook Pro 16" Overheating

Hello -

I'd just like to share my story that i am infinitely disappointed with the Macbook Pro 16". I have contacted my store and i have also contacted my reseller - Both just to say that it's 'Normal' that the device runs hot. Sadly, i purchased the device a few days before the Corona Lockdown, so i did not have the opportunity to bring it into the store -

Anyway for anyone considering this Macbook, here's an insight into how big the issue is.

Newly Formatted device. Apart from TGPro monitoring and firefox, no 3rd party software. 95% of storage empty. No additional applications open. Latest update Big Sur 11.3.1. Regular day. Chatting, music and calling through facetime audio. Safari open texts and tabs. No gaming, coding, movies, photo editing or similar. Ambient temperature 20 degrees in airconditioned room. Battery cycle count: 250, Condition: Normal. Full mAh 7166. 16 inch i9. Computer so hot, it is uncomfortable to use. Touchbad working *sometimes* Touchid working *somtimes*. No it is not on a bed, yes it is being taken well care of. The vents have full opportunity and nothing is blocking the airways.

Batterylife:

1 hour and 34 minutes

Fans at maximum 5600RPM

All cores 65-100 degrees.

All in all, all my previous Macbooks have performed beyond impressively, both thermally and performance wise. The 3500USD Macbook can barely run a few applications at the same time.

The computer is so hot that after typing i am numb in my fingers and i have first degree burns. Due to this issue i must use an external keyboard and mouse to accommodate the problem.

I wish i was joking.

Considering the vast amount of problems across the web for this expensive device i suggest Apple to do a Re-call programme.

Download EtreCheck: https://etrecheck.com/  and post the report here.

Click, “Free Download” button and then  “Click to download” button,

open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar and select “Copy report”.

Click the “Page” button in the toolbar at the bottom of this page and paste it when you reply.

Note: This is a diagnostic test.

From the report:

"    Heavy RAM usage - Apps are using a large amount of RAM.

Runaway user process - A user process is using a large percentage of your CPU."

I would check Activity Monitor to find the app.

  • User: The percentage of CPU capability that’s being used by apps you opened, or by the processes opened by those apps.

You may be able to quit that process/App

The Activity Monitor can help manage applications and processes that

would be contributory to this symptom; items you know are incorrect

can be Quit within A.M. Also options there, include Force Quit.

A temperature monitor and fan control that runs free, can be helpful.

The one I've had and learned how to use; it has evolved & still works.

• Macs Fan Control | Download [for macOS & Windows/Boot Camp]

This download works; you can choose sensor locations or toggle it

off and on, etc from its controls. And discover 'custom' free settings.

OK.

If you don't mind all those symptoms telling you to try &

run your Mac cooler than you've kept it, that's OK by me.

These are tools to use whether (or not) your mac runs amok..

..knowledge can help troubleshoot ongoing run status issues.

When you've owned used and repaired/donated dozens of

macs for free; then you'd know and appreciate other ideas.

(I see no sign of a EtreCheck report. Or adware malware scan.)

Good luck.

And thank you for using Apple Support Communities!🌻

Have you used iStat recently? I stopped using it years ago for similar reasons, but then they made quite a few updates to it and I have it installed on my three Macs now. Support was stellar when I purchased my 2020 iMac and didn't quite work. They had an update a day or two after my concern so that was enough to get my business again.

Their notification panels and menubar are quite good, at least for me. I may not have 30+ years of Apple experience, but I've used Macs since 2006, and support Macs in our corporate offices so I've been around the block a few times too.
