Upgraded to Big Sur today, finally, didn't fail. Uninstalled HP Smart, re-installed HP Smart. Followed some of the suggestions here previously. STILL won't find the scanner, says it's not found, etc. When I go to HP Support and enter my HP LaserJet Pro MFP M26nw model - and the 11.4 Big Sur - it doesn't recognize the upgrade. Only goes to 11.2. SO frustrating. Jeesh. Calling HP again, he gave me a direct line to see what's what.

Sorry for your problem. I know it's frustrating. Here are a couple of thoughts. Sometimes (often, actually) vendors, and specifically HP, are slow to respond with software upgrades for their printers and scanners. One may be coming. I would ask them when and if one is to be released. In the meantime, you may be able to use the Apple app Image Capture to scan, although it is not a full featured app. Another alternative is to download and test the app VueScan. There is no cost to try it, although there is a one time fee to use it without the watermark. It is a full featured app which is very well supported. I can recommend it as I have purchased it. I have no association with VueScan.
Needed to update this query, as my situation has become much clearer.
Spent much of yesterday with Apple Support, the agents were helpful, we shut down the Mac Air a couple of times, unplugged, plugged machines, the printer, deleted and re-installed HP Smart and HP Easy Scan, etc. This went on for hours. The Apple agents were insistent that it was, indeed, an issue with the HP printer/scanner.
Reached HP Support earlier today, and the matter was "resolved" - but not to anyone's satisfaction. Turns out that with my recent update from Catalina to Big Sur 11.4 on the Air, the HP LaserJet Pro MF M26nw scanner doesn't have the upgraded software to work. In fact, the agent said that my printer model would only print AND scan with El Capitan, even before the Catalina release. How about that? So, I'm out of luck. I'll be able to print, but that's it.
As Noted earlier, the Vue Scan software should solve your scanner problem.
Yes, you mentioned this. Hmm. Might have a look. Not spending any more money on this. /M.
