Is there a way to use carplay WITHOUT Siri?!

Getting highly irritated with the way my iPhone 12 interacts with my car.

  • If I turn WiFi off and connect via cable or bluetooth, my phone constantly pops up the message "turn wifi on to enable carplay"
  • If I turn WiFi on and connect via Carplay (though with Siri off) it spams me with the message to enable Siri, but then registers as having connected via Carplay and disables my ability to control media through my car's infotainment system. On the infotainment it will simply keep telling me "that function is unvailable while using Carplay" or something along those lines

The disturbing part really comes into play where I passed a large, growing fire on the side of the freeway and tried to call it in (homeless encampment, couldn't tell if there were still people trapped inside or not, etc). I hit the voice control and said "dial 911" and it would not recognize the command. I tried "call" "dial" "phone" etc and since Siri was disabled, it messed with my car voice controls and locked me out of voice dialing 911.

I don't use Siri and have no interest in virtual assistants, especially not when I have competing virtual assistants listening and recording everything I say (I don't care if it's for internal development or to sell my info and ads; I don't want it either way). I also don't use FaceID / TouchID vs just a pin, but that's a different convo.

Using Siri should not be mandatory to play music and use your phone with your car. How do I get full functionality, without getting spammed with messages to enable either Siri or Wifi? The voice commands will work (call 911, call John, etc) if I don't connect via Carplay and just use bluetooth (still with Siri disabled) so why the **** can't it work via Carplay?

The problem with not using CarPlay is then it just constantly spams my phone with messages to turn on CarPlay. Like, ok, fine, I won’t use CarPlay so I get the full functionality without having to use Siri, but then literally every minute or two I get “Turn on WiFi to use wireless CarPlay”. Pop up message that I have to close manually. Even pops up when I have my phone plugged in via cable.

Point taken on the safety issue but this happens even if I’m riding passenger and want to be on my phone. It’s rather aggressive and intrusive.

Another counterintuitive message I get is this one about enabling WiFi will disable CarPlay. Except CarPlay demands WiFi be enabled (in addition to Siri).

it’s very confusing when it tells me I’m using CarPlay and warns against disabling WiFi (thus ending CarPlay) but also tells me I can’t use CarPlay because Siri is not enabled. And then also spams me to enable Siri / WiFi if I try to do without either.

Your best bet would be not use CarPlay and just use your car's system, which of course will use a voice assistant.

You can use some CarPlay apps via touchscreen if your iPhone allows it but that is really not safe. You ran into your problem with the fire precisely because you are trying to make the two disparate systems NOT work the way they are designed.

Apple has a well defined policy regarding retaining conversations (they don't) and you have to opt in if you want to allow your use of Siri for analytic purposes. Your car voice assistant may have the same same option depending on the model you have.

You can go here Feedback - iPhone - Apple to request a change to your liking but the reason it is different is for safety so I would not hold my breath for a change from Apple.
