superdrive ejects dvd and CD

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running El Capitan 10.11.6. My problem arose sometime ago following an earlier update.

My internal Superdrive ejects all commercially produced CDs and DVD but will play CDs and DVDs recorded on my own equipment. So it appears that the Superdrive is operationally sound.

I have an external DVD recorder/player connected by USB and this will play all discs regardless of origin. So it appears that the software is not the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might reset the management of the internal Superdrive?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've used a laser disc cleaner and inserted a cleaning cloth using a credit card to no avail. As the drive is capable of reading CDs and DVDs which have been created on my equipment it seems likely that the problem is not hardware related.

My next step with be a factory reset and see what happens. But other suggestions are welcomed.
